We have just started playing this at the club and had our first game last night.

Needless to say some questions came up.

If you cross the T and the other ships are very close I take it they have to stop rather than plough through the opposing line?

What effect does 'agile' have, the passages for turning and agile seem to be the same in the rules.

How do you actually use that turn template?

So if in line astern you can turn 180 degrees in one move with a turn of 3?

The only difference with the battle turn away is that you begin the turn at the beginning of the move?

Thank you.

I'm another guy from 'Old Guy's' club game and I've another question. How do you cause crew casualties? As far as I can tell only critical s cause any crew loss!

Q. If you cross the T and the other ships are very close I take it they have to stop rather than plough through the opposing line?

A. They can go through as long as your model does not finish its turn on top of another model. If it will then you must stop.

Q What effect does 'agile' have.

A.You can turn on two separate occasions during the ships movement phase. Thats all it is. Usually destroyers and light cruiser get agile.

Q. How do you actually use that turn template?

A. I would have to do a vid.

Q. So if in line astern you can turn 180 degrees in one move with a turn of 3?

A. Yes. But only after moving half your speed distance straight ahead first. Turning 3 will cost you 3 inches in movement.

Q. The only difference with the battle turn away is that you begin the turn at the beginning of the move?

A. Never heard of it. Let me know when you find out.

Q. How do you cause crew casualties? As far as I can tell only critical s cause any crew loss!

A. Yes, and you loose 2 crew for every active fire on a ship at the end of each turn.

Wargamer, perhaps we are getting mixed up with the WWII and WWI set?

The examples of turns in AOD you do not lose anything for turning. Also the description for 'Agile' seems to be the same for normal turning.

The 'Battle turn away' was a manouver carried out by the German fleet at Jutland which put them out of harms way, the whole line does a 180 turn in one move where it was usually done I believe in two parts. It is a fallacy that only the Germans could do this, the RN just never had the need.

I learned real ship movements in the Fleetwork Trainer at HMS Mercury, which no longer exists.

Thanks

You could be right. I play a lot of WW2 VaS.

Me thinks Admiral Hugh Evan-Thomas might disagree. ;-)
