Were there any battles fought in the winter/snow? If so, has anyone try to game the period in winter/snow? Thanks for your patience with my ignorance. Mikeyg |

The two biggest would be Fredericksburg and Murfreesboro (Stone's River). |

Nashville was pretty big as well. |

I think Pea Ridge had some snow. |

But where these battlefields completely covered in snow? |

But where these battlefields completely covered in snow? I doubt that they were. For battles the size of Fredericksburg and Murfreesboro (Stone's River) I also doubt that the weather conditions would make that much difference to the progress of the battle. There doesn't seem to be any indication to that effect in the histories I have read. |

Ft. Donelson was really the only one I know of where the field was truly snow-covered. Not so with Fredericksburg or Murfreesboro. They were fought in extremely cold weather, but the fields were not snow-covered. |

Nashville had suffered thru lots of rain which created very muddy conditions which was followed by a heavy dose of freezing rain. The ice covered ground delayed Thomas from attacking. There was the great snowball fight that the Confederates did south of Chattanooga, but no Union troops were involved. link |

Nashville was fought just after an ice storm. many accounts tell of troops having a hard time keeping their footing. That might make an interesting special rule if you want to refight the battle. Otherwise it is pretty much of a foregone conclusion. Fredericksburg was also very muddy as the temperatures were well above freezing (though hardly tropical) which had melted most of the snow from an earlier storm. The only major winter action during the siege of Petersburg was Hatcher's Run on February 5th. That was fought during a pretty narrow window of good weather. Some hypothetical winter actions around Petersburg could include snow. |

There are some potential actions during Jackson's Romney campaign which featured snow/ice, but they are small actions or potential what-ifs. |

Jackson's Romney campaign was the one I thought of too. |

I personally think that the best winter events are the great snowball fights that occurred in the ANV and Army of the Tennessee. This could be cool to game……. |
