They cared about their charges and were enthusiastic about their work…….rare qualities in those times. (actually, as a part time surgeon myself, nowadays I do wonder…..but no, forget it)

Military surgeons of that era were hardly the cream of their profession, they were not well rated in the military hierarchy and they were poorly supplied and grossly understaffed.

The few exceptions, the reformers, have become household names. Larrey and Percy may well have been no more adept at the simple amputations required of most surgeons. Their skill was in administration and in changing a culture where the wounded were ignored as a drain on resources.

It's a joke…….Irish humour may not always translate.

The day people stop making fun of you, is the day no one is listening anymore! You should fear being ignored far more than being teased. Teasing is not mockery.

The tale of DoW not firing on Larrey hardly bears comment. Totally implausible for so many obvious reasons. Larrey's good fortune was not being shot out of hand by the Prussians, as he was recognised just in time.

Once again, I agree with deadhead. Larry designed ambulances and a medical service that was the best, especially early on during the Napoleonic wars.
The French army knew they would be taken care of better than anyone else, therefor they were more willing to take chances during the battle.

Both men cared about their profession and wounded.

Out of 1500 wounded a a 1000 or so came through serge joe

"Once again, I agree with deadhead. Larry designed ambulances and a medical service that was the best, especially early on during the Napoleonic wars. "

The first real good ambulance waggon was designed by the British(already in the French Revolutionary wars)and part of them taken over into Prussian service.

Percy, already in the Revolutionary wars used Wurst waggons to bring surgeons along with material to bandage etc. on the battle field.

Also, hardly any of Larrey's designs were built, and if, they were only for the Guard.

Both Larrey and Percy were passionate to help humans

As the real experts have said above, better than I could. Larrey's efforts were directed towards the Guard (he could not work miracles………but he did set a standard)

Percy was (arguably) more egalitarian, but had less influence, in the end ……………..

Senior medics (even now) are better if directed towards ensuring admin of provision of care than personally providing of….

On the spot is a young man's job. I have recently learnt that. We have to teach them what we think is best..we seniors must be challenged tho'. That is where these folk, like Larrey and Perty made a difference. They asked that question….most trainees in surgery, even now, do not!

We are an odd bunch, in surgery…selected as such

Serge, You must know by now, that we cannot take all of this too seriously. We all know how this story ended. We can argue about squares vs infantry, about how tall Boney really was, about whether the Prussians actually featured at all at " Waterloo"…but we all know, in the end, how it turned out.

Anything else is just fun.

We should not have conceded a penalty with 30 secs to go, today, against Spurs, in injury time, but nothing will change that…we did. I will live with that.

It don't mean Nuthin'…it don't mean nuthin' (repeat over and over)
