"For over 80 years, military films have made an impact at the Academy Awards. With American Sniper scoring six nominations at this year's Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Actor, we thought it would be a good time to do our rundown of the top dozen military movies in Oscar history (in our humble opinion – feel free to mention some of your favorites in the comments section below this article)… And if you want more details on American Sniper, check out the full Military.com review as well as a feature on Chris Kyle and this video footage.

Note: This list only features films that have won an Oscar. There are certainly many classic Oscar-less films out there that would make our list of best military movies ever (Das Boot, for one)…"

If I have to choose only one: The Bridge on the River Kwai
If I have to choose two: Lawrence of Arabia

I'll take both of Armand's picks. Decades later they still resonate.

I would have gone for "The Cruel Sea" or "Paths of Glory", but as neither won an Oscar, it would have to be "Lawrence of Arabia", a true epic.

Hated both Bridge over the River Kwai and Lawrence of Arabia. May be From Here to Eternity but that was just OK. Seems like nothing in the Academy Award category does much for me.

I have enjoyed watching WINGS..great flying sceens but a typical 1920-30 script. and The Best Years of Our Lives but didn't really consider that a 'war' movie as such. As a movie I thought Lawrence of Arabia was awsome!

I'm with Allen57. Except for Apocalypse Now none of the movies on that list even make my "good movies" list (though I've only seen 8 of them). My favorite movies set in or during a war are (in no particular order):

  • The Thin Red Line
  • Breaker Morant
  • Paths of Glory
  • The Battle of Britain
  • Come and See

No "Kelly's Hero's" or "The Dirty Dozen?" Out of what's listed, I'll go with Private Ryan, and The Bridge. A think 12 o'clock High is a good movie that is not on the list.

What about 'Glory'? That picked up three Oscars.
