The good news is that I'm caught up on membership renewals! Still working my way through the email mountain, though…

The bad news is not for myself, but Editor Gwen, who went to the hospital in great pain and was told she is passing a kidneystone… She has been injected many times, given many pills, and is "resting" at home. Please keep her in your prayers.

I feel for her….I've had many kidney stones and they are the worst pain I've ever experienced.

I agree… Worst passion I ever had. She has our prayers.

Pain, not passion. Stupid autocorrect.

Yes I agree. The worst pain ever. I went thru it twice! I had a nurse tell me she had babies and also had kidney stones and by far the kidney stones won hands down in the pain factor.

Ouch ! Hope the darn thing passes ! I've had 'em
too and while I can stand most of life's pains, that
one I need the painkillers !

My Ex worked for GE Medical Systems until 1992 and I remember well her telling me they could destroy kidney stones with ultrasound. It was one of many "gee whiz" discoveries she would tell me were on the way. I guess it did not work after all. More's the pity. I worked with a young man in the 70s who had the stone and it was obvious his every moment was spent in agony. I have never seen a person so chalk white. Horrible people still have to suffer this. Our editorial staff here at TMP certainly has had more than their fair share of health issues this past year.

Winging Editor Gwen a speedy recovery.

When I've had them, I wanted to walk in front of a truck before I got the morphine. The situation is not helped by nurses telling you that this is the closest that you'll come to experiencing childbirth. I told them that my wife had epidurals for both kids and didn't feel a thing.

I had a number of stones before I finally got told that there are two types: those that are calcium and those that come from uric acid. Mine are the latter. Now I take half a tablet a day and I haven't had a stone for years. It is worth asking questions and persisting until you get a satisfactory answer.

I hope that Gwen is better soon.

Hope she gets well quickly. A relative went through this-painkillers and cranberry juice. Get well soon!!

One of my uncles had kidney stones a few years ago. He said the pain was so unbearable, at one point he was gripping the bathroom doorknob so hard, he left fingerprints.

Best wishes to Gwen for a speedy recovery.

Mine were calcium. I guess as men we produce more than needed. Women usually need extra and typically don't produce stones. Gwen may want to have the doctor test for type once passed.

coopman21 Feb 2015 8:58 a.m. PST

Best wishes to you Gwen.

Texas Jack21 Feb 2015 9:14 a.m. PST

Get well soon Gwen!

Greg G121 Feb 2015 12:15 p.m. PST

Get well soon Gwen, I have had kidney stones on multiple occasions not fun.
The ultrasound system is in use, however it works in about 80% of cases, I'm unfortunately in the other 20%.

Ragbones21 Feb 2015 1:01 p.m. PST

Best wishes for a quick recovery.

funny side note. One of the main reasons people were medically evacuated back state sides during the first Gulf War was due to kidney stones. Spent all morning all week back then doing nothing but contrast studies to find the stones. Had a whole barracks filled with those patients.

Thank you guys for all the prayers and nice words. It was very painful and just this morning I felt again the pain and thank God I am ok now… I am taking my pills to heal the pain, I have my pain killer.

And to my boss, Thank you so much for being such a kind and nice boss to us.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I feel for the poor guy as kidney stones are no joke at all!

I had my first attack of them about a year ago. While in the E.R., I was literally vomiting from pain induced nausea. I was ready to kiss the nurse when she finally shot me up with Morphine. I passed several more in December after I had major abdominal surgery. (I was told that all the "action" in my guts had broken them loose) That time was not quite as bad as the first time around, but a hellish experience none the less.

Truth be told, it was not the worst Pain I've ever experienced. That dubious honor would go to gout….which I first had an flare up of soon after the second kidney stone episode. Like a fool I left it untreated for several days ,not realising what it was and hoping it would go away, and it got to the point I was literally in tears and unable to put any weight on my foot without screaming. After another E.R. visit, an overnight hospital stay, and lots of narcotics I never wanted to experience that again. Needless to say, I keep on top of that one with preventative meds and when I do have the rare flare up, hydocodone is my friend!

Other's view on which sort of pain is worse may vary of course! ;-) Either way it's good to hear that he's doing better!

Mine were uric acid related too. Fortunately my gout medication also works to prevent that sort of kidney stone from developing.

I have them right now. Waiting to see which treatment I'll get – laser or sound.
