My previous query regarding flags for French converged grenadier units produced something I did not expect when Ligniere pointed out that Lejeune's painting Borodino features a depiction of a non-regulation eagle / fanion. Under magnification the painting does depict an eagle topped tricolour flag /fanion for the 84th Line with gold embroidered numerals in the corners and an eagle within a wreath in the centre. As Lejeune was at the battle and a serving officer leads me to believe the depiction is probably accurate. It would appear the colonel of the 84th had a disregard for regulations and deep pockets. So do the learned minds of TMP know of any other non-standard eagles, flags and fanions? Thank you in advance. Cheers TW |

Sorry all my books are in storage currently, but this may help: link link My understanding is that the fanions were supposed to be plain red, white or blue. Colonels did however produce non regulation designs.
