Hi all

I'm looking for some figure alternatives for the various non-movie LOTR characters. A lot of the GW one's go for ridiculous prices, or extortionate prices are asked for them! (There a couple of Kings of Men on Ebay at the moment that are going for about £20.00 GBP each!!)

Anyway, I was hoping you might be able to offer some suggestions for figures that are similar in style / scale, and that could be used for characters such as Arathorn, Halbarad, Arvedui, Malbeth, Gildor, those sorts of figures

I'm planning on using Perry's Renaissance Italian light infantry and Westernised Stradiots as Arnorians

So, if anyone can help, it would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks
Ryan

The problem is the scale. They have very realistic proportions which don't match well with some lines.

Look at Ral Partha, Gripping Beast(a bit large though)

Oh and check out Footsore Miniatures:

Here is a Footsore(formerly Mustketerr Miniature) painted up as a Rohan Captain. I didn't paint this, but stole the idea and not a bad fit.

Dungeon and Dragons/Pathfinder Plastics scale very well with LOTR. You really have to pic and choose, as some of the sculpts are terrible.

The last bit of advice, is just convert the regular troops. Shield/weapon swaps. Add a cloak with Greenstuff. Different paint jobs.

That's a good suggestion Xin!
I've been thinking of the same thing myself. I've noticed also that the size of the LotF minis changes a bit throughout the line. Early figs, especially the plastic troops are pretty close to true 28mm and would probably mix well with most plastic historicals. Later figs are a smidge bigger and the figs from the Escape from goblin town box are absolutely enormous with dwaves that seem almost like men.

There's also the Sgt. Major (Formerly Vendel) "Bloody Day Fantasy" line of figs which is clearly based on LotR, but more the classic pre-jackson style.

Still, there might be some possibilities in there.

If anyone has any other suggestions, I'd love to hear them as well.

Thanks both. I love the Footsore figures. Their Merlin figure will make a good radagast or blue wizard.

I'm sure there are loads out there. It's just finding them. I've got a couple of the Reaper Bones figures, but they're a tad too big to mix with the early plastics (I was/am going to be using them as Elladan and Elrohir)

Tolkien's description of the Rohirrim matches pretty well with Anglo-Danish or Viking mounted troops (you could see their braids under their helmets, so no camails). Any historical figures like that would work for most of the rank and file of the various armies. Also, unlike the movies, Tolkein almost never refers to plate armor; everyone is in mail. The extension of plate armor in the movies to all the troops is based on the single mention of Prince Imrahil's vambrace, and the fact that plate is easier and cheaper to manufacture these days than labor-intensive mail.

Ebob has some good mounted/dismounted character figures in his Rebellion line.
Crusader also has a few sets of mounted/dismounted characters in their various dark ages line.

I love these Footsore Dark Age Irish as Wildmen of Dunland:

Join the One Ring site.
Best LOTR site on the web with great contributors, an excellent library with a pretty friendly bunch to ask questions about all things in LOTR modelling.

Good shout on the pathfinder miniatures.

I found these as use for Arathorn and Halbarad:

Tempted to use these as Stormcallers:

I really like the Ebob miniatures, and those Dark Age Irish would work really as Carn Dum troops as well!

I found the One Ring and Last Alliance crowd to be arrogant, and obnoxious, and quite spiteful when I went on the forums originally. It has been a long time since I frequented those pages though, so if they've changed as you suggest, I will give it another look.

Brummie, They have awesome sculpts, just be aware, most Reaper figures tower over LOTR figs.

I meant Pathfinders line of Plastics. While the sculpts of the plastics like detail, they do scale very well with LOTR.

Ah, thanks for letting me know before I bought them! It might get them anyway for other projects grin
