I have been working towards a generic army that can be used for the continentals in the late war southern campaign. So far I have come up with the following uniforms for the following different units. Am I missing any, or are there any obvious errors? Blue coats faced red and lined white: Maryland units in French lottery coats at Camden 1st Maryland in 1779 official uniform at GCH 2nd Maryland regt officers in 1779 official uniform at GCH certain Maryland units in heritage uniforms Delaware troops in heritage uniforms Delaware troops outfitted by Maryland, 1780-81 certain Virginia units in heritage uniforms at Charleston 1st and 2nd Virginia regt. officers in 1779 official uniform at GCH certain South Carolina units in heritage uniforms up to Charleston Pulaski's Legion Infantry Blue coats faced and lined red: Continental artillery certain Virginia light infantry at Camden Virginia state artillery at Camden Brown coats faced red and lined white: 2nd Maryland regt ranks at GCH Delaware troops in French lottery coats Virginia continentals at Charleston in French lottery coats Blue coats faced buff: Armand's Legion Infantry |

Here is the rest. "Heritage uniforms" are older uniform styles usually issued by the colonies. "Ranks" refers to uniforms worn by troops but not necessarily officers. I know Delaware is contradictory, but there seem to be different opinions. Blue unlined coats, possibly not regimentals: 1st Virginia regt. ranks at GCH Hunting Shirts: certain southern continentals in heritage uniforms Delaware continentals after Camden Continentals in summer of 1781 Civilian clothing: North Carolina regiments 1781 Heritage uniforms: Georgia continentals through Savannah South Carolina contintals through Charleston Virginia continentals through Charleston North Carolina continentals through Charleston Maryland continentals through Camden Delaware continentals through Camden Unknown: 2nd Virginia regt. ranks at GCH 1st, 2nd and 3rd Virginia detachments |

So you are listing Patriot uniforms and not just Continental uniforms which are regular troops. A large number of irregular ranger units worn daily frontier dress with field identification markings which were often rags tied around the arm. Such dress had a wide variety of headgears including animal caps (with and without tails); wide brim hats; tricornes; stocking caps; and an occasional blue bonnet though those were more common among loyalist troops. Trousers could be cloth or leather. Shirts and jackets varied as well. The South Carol9ina unique light infantry style cap was a trademark of their State units. I do conduct more research on Loyalist units than patriot but for the extensive frontier and limited settled regions in the South, Common daily dress was prevalent in many battles here. |
