"There really much to say other than this photo is extremely gripping. This photo was taken a while back and has been passed around the internet but we thought we would post it to show the amazing loyalty of dogs and their owners or handlers…"

Well yes, but soldiers are generally warmer and softer than marble floors… |

Depends on how hot it is in the airport, Jemima. Sometimes cool marble floors are just what the doctor ordered for taking a nap! |

There are several good organizations out there that specialize in helping military dogs find good 'forever' homes upon retirement, oftentimes with one of their handlers. It's the least we can do for these wonderful animals. |

They don't shoot them anymore upon retirement? |

I didn't think they shot the dogs when they retired ? |

It depends what sort of dog and what it's trained to do. In the UK it is illegal under the Dangerous Dogs Act for a civilian to own certain classes of military dog and these classes of dog must therefore be destroyed upon retirement. A lot however, are not illegal and will not be destroyed – many (probably most?) of the non-dangerous dogs then end up as the family pets of their former handlers. |

As an aside, one of the funniest books I've ever read is the true story of a British Army dog and his handler, performing feats of derring-don't in Northern Ireland. Highly recommended: link |

"Depends on how hot it is in the airport, Jemima. Sometimes cool marble floors are just what the doctor ordered for taking a nap!" Heh, my Cocker-Collie cross would reckon you were high on crack, but my late uncle's Corgis would indeed seek out the coldest, hardest, draughtiest corners. They made brilliant self-propelled draught-excluders/doorstops. I should add that these Corgis were tough, working cattle-dogs, though were (somewhat bizarrely) directly-related to Her Majesty's palace-dwelling lard-arsed mutts (1st & 2nd cousins)! |

I like dogs better than people … and more and more I see why … |

I know where you're coming from, but you REALLY wouldn't want a former military attack-dog for a family pet or anywhere in your street. They're not known as Hairy Land-Sharks for nothing. Search-dogs and General-Purpose dogs (again, mainly German Shepherds, though without the agression-training and conditioning) are generally fine and legal to own after retirement, though some have 'issues'. Military sniffer-dogs (mainly labradors and spaniels) are perfectly legal to own after retirement and want nothing more than food, warm/soft surfaces to flop on, someone to slobber over and something (ANYTHING) to look for. |

Yeah, I saw the video of the two dogs going after that idiot who jumped the fence at the White House. I'm oddly amused that one of the sniffer dogs we had on base was a beagle. He was the only dog small enough to lower through a submarine hatch. |

I have a beagle and LOVED it!. Here, attack dogs went to an special place (estancia) were they can retired. We are the second country in the world who love so much dogs. Amicalement Armand |

They use Beagles at airports a good bit – since they are cute people are less likely to have a problem with them being around. |

Of course the dog COULD be saying: "This is MY food. All the rest of you stay back! " |
Lion in the Stars | 18 Feb 2015 6:16 p.m. PST |
@tberry: Possibly, but I'm willing to bet that it's more like "THIS human feeds me. All the rest of you stay back!" |
