Every two days they have been asking me to scan and email them copies as proof of my identity! They want a photo ID, proof of address, and proof of my SSN! SEROIUSLY! At first I was certain this was a phishing scheme but it's legit. They say it's a fed thing and has to be done or else. The say I can't add funds from my bank account to my Paypal account. No big loss there because I only us PayPal for purchases. But the whole thing really bothers me. Giving them this level of data is just begging for trouble especially given the amount of high profile hacking as of late. Heck, them doing this puts a huge target sign on them! Has this happened to you yet? What are you going to do? |

I only use PP to pay for things with a credit card. My wife has had this happen. If you want to continue using PP then you are going to have to give them the info – PP has no choice in the matter. I'm pretty certain this is falling under the anti-terrorism funding bill from a decade or so ago. Not sure why it is only getting enforced on PP now. |

This still sounds like a scam. I would never give my SSN to ANYONE on the internet. Even doing legitimate taxes and banking online, I've only ever been asked for the last four digits of my SSN and never the full number. Maybe create a new account? EDIT: Oh, you said "proof" of your SSN. I wonder how one proves their own SSN? That sounds nuts. |
BTCTerrainman | 15 Feb 2015 1:20 p.m. PST |
May be a scam, or you may have a high volume in paypal receipts. If the latter, contact paypal directly off of their site (rather than the email). If you have a high volume, it is a tax situation where they need to send you a W2 or the equivalent……………… Always safest to contact them yourself rather than via any email you receive…………….. My .02 |

Yep, never give out your SSN to anyone, other than the tax man, and your employer. Not even your doctor. They don't really need it, and it is illegal to use it as a personal identifier, or used to be, even though everyone does it. Sounds like a scam to me. I can see them wanting the other info, for complying with Fed banking/money laundering rules though, especially if you use them a lot. Call, and talk to them in person. There is a phone number for Paypal to do that, under the Contact section. |

Call PayPal directly. Sometimes it is a long wait, but they have always been courteous and worked hard to resolve my issues. |
Tgunner | 15 Feb 2015 1:32 p.m. PST |
I called them just now and they said that there was an attempt to move funds out of my account! Yikes! Like I said, I only use it to buy stuff so that's what set this off. Good thing I'm not verified or else they would have allowed it. Scary stuff! |
nnascati | 15 Feb 2015 1:51 p.m. PST |
NO! Be careful, whenever I get mail purporting to be from Paypal asking for updated info, I call them. |
Hal Thinglum | 15 Feb 2015 2:16 p.m. PST |
I forward them to spoof@ebay.com and they check into it and get back to me within a day or so. |
Tgerritsen | 15 Feb 2015 2:18 p.m. PST |
PayPal has a call in customer service number. Use it. This sounds like a total scam. |
Mako11 | 15 Feb 2015 2:40 p.m. PST |
Needless to say, I suspect, time to change your password, if you haven't already. |
53Punisher | 15 Feb 2015 4:36 p.m. PST |
Yes, that has SCAM written all over it. I get those once in a while and immediately delete them. Don't fall for it. |

This is 100% a phishing exercise. Change your account with PayPal and also CALL THEM – don't even email them – to report the problem. |
wrgmr1 | 15 Feb 2015 5:15 p.m. PST |
Key component to any Phishing e-mail is the senders e-mail address. If it does not have papal.com in the address it is a scam. My website gets 3 or 4 phishing e-mails a month. All kinds. |
hocklermp5 | 15 Feb 2015 5:44 p.m. PST |
I get these from time to time and not just concerning PayPal. They do not pass the sniff test. Delete them. Smother at birth. |
combatpainter | 15 Feb 2015 6:36 p.m. PST |
It is a scam. Beware. I have had the same thing and just ignored it. You need to clean out your computer to eliminate viruses. |
dampfpanzerwagon | 15 Feb 2015 6:59 p.m. PST |
I had a similar experience last year. I had built up a paypal profile with lots of payments coming in (the sale of my books) and very little going out. According to my son the profile the sales pattern looked a hicky. In the end I had to supply the information, but I did complain that this was a lot of information. I was told that this was a government requirement to stop money laundering. "If in doubt – blame the government!" As with any dealings with paypal, make sure that this is not a scam, by only dealing through the correct and official Paypal site. Tony |

PayPal will never ask you for anything, they make that clear on their site. This is a scam, just ignore it. ignore any emails claiming to be from PayPal. It really is that simple. |
Unrepentant Werewolf at work | 16 Feb 2015 5:08 a.m. PST |
Most of the ones I get start with "Dear costumer", just delete them. |
coopman | 16 Feb 2015 6:38 a.m. PST |
It's phishing – just ignore it. I got the same message. I checked my account & the only suspicious transactions in there were the ones that I actually made. |
myxemail | 16 Feb 2015 7:06 a.m. PST |
My wife got one of those emails last week. The email address and URL that it was sent from was "palpay.com". Once I saw that I knew it was a scam and advised her to delete that email immediately. Mike |
axabrax | 16 Feb 2015 8:48 a.m. PST |
Yes, it's a scam. Gmail and Yahoo mail automatically dump them into junk. You might consider switching to a smarter email service? |
bjporter | 16 Feb 2015 9:32 a.m. PST |
PayPal does request the information mentioned, but the emails are most likely attempts to capitalize on the PayPal information request. If I log into PayPal it reminds me that I need to provide that information to move money into and out of my bank account. But I can still send money and make purchases so it seems strange that they keep asking for the information. |
BrigadeGames | 17 Feb 2015 12:57 p.m. PST |
Do it all from within your Paypal account after logging in (not using the link in the email.) PP is required to collect the info so they can send you a tax form (most likely a 1099 form which also gets reported to the IRS. Make sure you report the paypal income. |
andygamer | 21 Feb 2015 6:41 p.m. PST |
I haven't opened them at all to see what they might say (they've gone to Junk immediately and I've just been blocking them) but I've gotten about three "PayPal" notices from a French scammer. service @ particuliers. fr |
