Anybody know where I can get info on the colours of stockings of units in the WSS? I can find info on coats, hats, breeches, cuffs, etc. quite easily, but I cannot find a good source that gives the stockings for various units. Mainly I'm interested in French, but I'm building up Allied units too. Should I worry, or just assume that everyone has gaiters and paint them white?

actually that wouldn't be quite right. This is a great resource:

The Grant books are useful, but quite hard to get. There are some small volumes by Sapherson, which are more readily available ( e.g, from Caliver Books), they cover period from about 1690 through to 1710 or so.
I have also found some of books from here useful ( a,though I see they are now only avaiable as CDs)

Robert Hall Flags and Uniforms of the French Infantry. He also has a volume on the Dutch.

You can see some of my French units here:

Caliver books, The Armies and Uniforms of Marlborough's Wars: Part One and Two, will give you all you will need unless it becomes a total passion then the Hall books from the P&S society or cd versions from Baccus.

This is a useful site:

Although not ALL uniforms are available, those Brigades (both sides) that have their name in blue can be clicked. All regiments of that Brigade will then be shown, inclusing their standards.

Thanks for the response. I should say I'm using 6mm figures, so loads of detail isn't necessary, but I still want to get the base colours right. The Grant book is a little pricey from amazon, but I've just looked at Caliver's website, and they print to order. If I the library service here would do loans I might try for that, but it's out of the question – I have to buy all my reference books. The online resources look the best. Thanks again.

the grant book on amazon.co.uk is 21 pounds. a lot cheaper than the US site, even considering shipping costs.
