Try using carpet tiles and door mats – cheap and ready to go

Also, cork table mats smothered in suitable brown-ish paint then heavily and evenly covered in flock to taste. A 'dry grass' yellow-ish flock/static grass will provide a decent harvested stubble look and a spring flock provide a decent 'new-crop-a-growing appearance. Cork place mats are pretty rigid, cheap to acquire and can be turned into fields in no time. We also use them (painted grey) as the basis of built up areas. |

I'm even cheaper and lazier. I pick up carpet tile samples any time I am at a home improvement place. |

For commercial items, look at JR Miniatures, they have several. Also, fake fur and a few cans of earth toned spray paints – and a lot of drying time! – yield very nice fields. Or, you can make your own with acrylic caulks. |

Among other things, including some of the above, I use pieces of felt in various shades of green and brown. link |
