Example: Are there any computer assisted identification systems to determine if a ship's silhouette is from friend or foe? With so much traffic in and around the Crimea and other areas, I can see this becoming a serious issue. Thanks, Dan TMP link |

Does it overlap an image onto what the pilot sees in his helmet? Or have I been watching too much Sci Fi? Dan |

IFF data would likely show up on the primary radar display, Dan. IIRC, the F-15C has a system that does this. |

I don't think it's an image recognition system, though (which is what it sounds like you're looking for). I think it's more of a radio signal going out from the ships/planes with a coded "here's my info" message. The message is decoded and a textbox is displayed on the pilot's heads up display. Of course I don't actually KNOW this, so…there you go. |

Basic aircraft transponder (used by everyone flying), plus additional IFF transponders specific to military aircraft. As far as I know, there isn't a US system that tries to ID plane type by silhouette. The Russians might have one, since they also have an IR search-and-track system, but given that the Russians have been supplying half the world with aircraft for the last 50 years, I'm not sure how much difference IDing by silhouette will make. |

They use tactical data links, eg Link16 or Tadil-J. |
