Hi, I have just started painting my Rivet Wars figs and found my usual Vallejo Matt Varnish is too dull for my liking; and the Gloss is to bright. So I came up with the idea of mixing the two which gives the finnish I want but are there any drawbacks to this ie yellowing and cracking as time progresses. Any help or advise would be welcome, thanks all |

I would not do it as my experiences have been bad. I recommend one over the other. I use high gloss krylon for the protective layer and then come back over the top, once dry, with matt varnish. I'll do the same with brush on. If you want to test it. I recommend you take an old figure and paint it is a single color. then try your method. |

Have you tried Vallejo Satin varnish? The other varnish you could use is Daler Rowney matt acrylic varnish. When you buy it let it settle out so the bottom of the jar is the thick gloppy matting agent and the top 2/3 to 3/4 will be clear carrier liquid that's a bit syrup like. Pour this clear liquid off into a small screw top (air-tight) bottle/jar. Slowly add some of it back into the gloppy matting agent. Try it on a dark colour figure (I have Perry Plastic painted very dark blue for this test). You need a dark figure to see if it is going really matt. You'll probably get white streaks so add in more clear carrier until it dries matt with no streaks. At this point you can add in more carrier or artist quality white spirit. The more you add the more satin the varnish will dry. In other words neither gloss or matt which is what you wanted. |

dont mix them coat with gloss first, then after that dries completely after that dries completely after that dries completely after that dries completely then coat it with matte. |

A friend of mine died mixing varnishes. It was a horrible end, but a beautiful finish. |

The OP isn't asking for a matt varnish. They want a finish that is neither matt or gloss and want to know how to achieve that. |

Doctor, you are absolutely fine mixing matt and gloss vallejo varnish. In fact, they even suggest it on their own site. I never had one single problem, and I have done it many times. |
