Hi what does everyone think about the right hill size and thickness for Warhammer Fantasy Battle? I'm going to make (probably) or buy (possibly) some more hills. It seems like 1" thick stepped hills are the way to go these days, or maybe even 3/4", and since I need to store them, they'll be modular pieces no larger than 10x12", or maybe 10x10" (depends on the box). I used to think hills should be 2" or 3" thick, but that was in old versions of the game where hills blocked line of sight. In 8th, hills don't do that any more, and thinner is better for placing movement trays on the slopes. And again in old editions the rule was terrain bases shouldn't have a dimension longer than 12" (so should fit inside a 12" circle). There doesn't seem to be a rule like that any more, but it still seems a good guideline (and the pieces are easier to store). Some of the hill pieces can have flat vertical sides that can connect to other pieces and make bigger hills. |

I managed to find 1" thick, dark grey upholstery foam years ago. It was perfect for hills! Cut up as needed, the pieces would stack nicely, and sort of "stick" to each other during a game, unless jostled a lot. And you could pack them up easily, and not worry about breakage, or chipping! Never did get around to flocking them, but you could probably do that too, if so inclined. |

Depending on what you use to make your hills, I generally default to 1" thick pink foam per layer for all games. |

No experience with Fantasy Battle, but I'm annoyed when hills aren't taller than the infantry. I don't like assuming a hill gives me complete cover and having to argue with an opponent that it's supposed to provide cover despite them being able to see a figure's head. It's one of the many reasons that I make sure we're in agreement over the effects of terrain while we're setting up. One of the clubs I play at has a lot of terrain for FoW and we just started playing Bolt Action so the hills are not big enough. We're slowly building up a stash of appropriate terrain. |

That's what we wind up doing. But if the hill is tall enough to actually block line of sight its a lot easier |

So I'm hearing most people say 1" thick layers. The only other suggestions are to change the rules. Thanks for the help! |

I always use 2 layers of 1" thick foam, to make a taller hill with a "step" in places and steeper slopes in others. Sometimes I make them even higher. There is no maximum size footprint that I know of. |
