"The archaeologists, led by Prof Tony Pollard of Glasgow University, will begin most comprehensive excavation carried out so far of the farm at Hougoumont.

A team of archaeologists is planning to excavate a Napoleonic farmhouse that was defended against seemingly impossible odds by the Coldstream Guards during the Battle of Waterloo, 200 years ago.

The archaeologists, led by Prof Tony Pollard of Glasgow University, will begin the most comprehensive excavation carried out so far of the farm at Hougoumont and the wider battlefield. They will be joined by Mark Evans, a former Coldstream Guards officer, who narrowly escaped death while fighting the Taliban in Afghanistan…"

If you do go right to the bottom of this link you will read that there has been just such an exercise going on for over a year, not credited here (see Sutherland's comment).

Academically, this latest news sounds a bit strange. Popular science, all we need is the rogue guys with metal detectors, now.

Funny time for the exercise, just when massive work has been completed, with some very heavy equipment driving over the site for over a year. There is a boat missed here?

I fear that this quiet spot will now become a "Complete (sic) Hougoumont Experience" with buildings turned into museums and visitor centres/gift shops. I know that the alternative was dereliction………..but….I was lucky to see it so many times when it was being ignored and lay empty
