Let's do this one as well…..

As "1066 And All That" brilliantly described it:

Royalists – wrong but romantic
Parliamentarians – right but repulsive

So? Which do you prefer?

The Scots!

The Tin Dictator12 Feb 2015 3:55 p.m. PST

Royalists.
Cromwell was just a wannabe.

Death to the King !

Phillius Sponsoring Member of TMP12 Feb 2015 4:43 p.m. PST

The King.

The only people involved who could be called democrats were the levellers.

Those guys in Tawny were just self-centred fakers and wannabes.

Legbiter12 Feb 2015 5:01 p.m. PST

The Scots. [1] I am one. [2] Hodden Gray + blue bonnet is easy to paint!

sneakgun12 Feb 2015 5:14 p.m. PST

God Save the King, even though he's an idiot.

Parliament against tyranny (this isn't political is it?).

ZULUPAUL Supporting Member of TMP12 Feb 2015 5:19 p.m. PST

Parliament… off with the traitor king's head!

shelldrake12 Feb 2015 5:24 p.m. PST

Three cheers for The King!

The others are politicians, and therefore can not be trusted as far as you can pike them.

Gone Fishing12 Feb 2015 5:55 p.m. PST

And another for the King. I've always quite liked Charles, and though admittedly it has nothing to do with the rights or wrongs of the case, the man certainly died bravely.

Gennorm12 Feb 2015 5:58 p.m. PST

Parliament, but bear in mind that the war was fought to make the king see sense.

I am a Wroyalist.

Another pikeman for Parliament!

"I had rather have a plain, russet-coated Captain, that knows what he fights for, and loves what he knows, than that which you call a Gentleman and is nothing else."
Oliver Cromwell

Wackmole912 Feb 2015 7:02 p.m. PST

Royalist because Oliver Cromwell rule was one of western history's low points.

Level pike for Parliament!

John

platypus01au12 Feb 2015 7:18 p.m. PST

Though I have heard someone explain the English Civil War by describing the Roundheads as "English taliban".

Cheers,
John

the Levellers

Martin Rapier13 Feb 2015 12:12 a.m. PST

Parliament, naturally.

Khusrau13 Feb 2015 12:33 a.m. PST

The Scots… I still wonder why it's described as the 'English' Civil War, when it started with the Bishop's Wars, and battles were fought in Wales and Scotland.

KTravlos13 Feb 2015 3:37 a.m. PST

The Levellers, followed by the Cornish.

foxweasel13 Feb 2015 4:14 a.m. PST

The King, perhaps a return to the "Divine right of Kings" wouldn't be a bad thing now. Get some nice new red tunics, very long bayonets and get the Empire going again. Start with somewhere nice, Hawaii perhaps!😁

BobGrognard13 Feb 2015 5:15 a.m. PST

The King. For all of his faults. Rather a monarch than a politician any day.

Yesthatphil13 Feb 2015 5:29 a.m. PST

I am glad Parliament won – as it gives us the timeline we have enjoyed … as for sides? No, they were all decent Englishmen …

Phil

forrester13 Feb 2015 5:48 a.m. PST

It's almost impossible to "take sides" after several centuries of taking constitutional monarchy for granted, and when current political parties don't correspond with the divisions of the time.
It was probably a case of being the right result at the time, but with much nastiness to achieve it, and followed, eventually, by a swing back to a middle ground that probably wouldn't have happened otherwise.

mad monkey 113 Feb 2015 6:24 a.m. PST

I like a wild cav charge. For da King.

mbsparta13 Feb 2015 7:11 a.m. PST

Parliament rules … Royalist drool

The King. Cromwell banned plum pudding, amongst other things. Miserable git.

Black Cavalier13 Feb 2015 9:49 a.m. PST

Pro Rege et Regnum

"How do you know he's a Royalist?"
"Tattooed on the back of his neck."

Actually, the royalist tattoo is my across my upper back.

Cyrus the Great13 Feb 2015 10:55 a.m. PST

The Levellers.

Robert Burke13 Feb 2015 11:17 a.m. PST

The Irish!

Razor7813 Feb 2015 11:47 a.m. PST

As my English ancestors sided with the King then I do as well!!

Axebreaker13 Feb 2015 12:25 p.m. PST

Royalist as I enjoy the story of Rupert and Montrose.

Christopher

Aviator13 Feb 2015 4:00 p.m. PST

Cromwell, God's Englishman….

But my ancestors were Cornish, so hard to decide!

Fried Flintstone13 Feb 2015 5:28 p.m. PST

Cornish – obviously :-)

corona6613 Feb 2015 8:52 p.m. PST

The Scottish Covenanters, who fought both Royalists and Parliamentarians at different times.

recon3514 Feb 2015 10:35 a.m. PST

Scots. My great, great, etc. Grandfather, William Gowan, was captured at Dunbar, sold into bondage and shipped off to New England.

BW195915 Feb 2015 7:55 a.m. PST

For the king, because I can't stand Cromwell, and am part Irish.

Mute Bystander17 Feb 2015 7:02 p.m. PST

There was an English Civil War?

Okay, I did know that (but not much more, being an American,) but my preference is neither. I avoid this family squabble the way a cop wants to avoid a "domestic violence" call – both sides will be against you when you show up.

Civil Wars are never nice no matter how the winner paints the end result…
