Brazil:

link That's the main source of water for São Paulo, Brazil (for 12 million people). The Nile River: link QUESTION: Other than this Lego example, has anyone built a desalination plant or a small dam to defend?
Here's a different configuration: link Dan TMP link TMP link |

Saw an article on Brazil, yesterday, but only read the headline. Apparently, people there are already hoarding water, due to anticipated, draconian water rationing measures. Perhaps it may be time for them to consider replanting some of that rainforest they've clearcut. |

Was going to say that out in the West, we're already having water issues, what with the underground aquifers not getting refilled as fast as we're pulling water out of them. To quote the old master: "In the American West, whiskey is for drinking, and water is for fightin' over!" |

Wow talk about bring back some memories, on those TMP links. I can't wait till after we move and I can really set up things for doing such things. Ion Age has just released Planetary Militia, they have gas mask with hoses and gogles/visors could be used for near futre troops looking for or protecting water. Might have to watch "Desert Punk" again! P.S. CC Welcome back!! |

That first graphic is very interesting. "2.2 million people die annually from diseases related to poor sanitation and contaminated drinking water." That stinks, for sure. But compared to the past, especially as a percentage of the world population? We've advanced incredibly. Then compare the South America data from the first graphic with the pictures of Brazil. Theoretically, with 26% of the world's water and only 6% of the population, they should have plenty of water. So perhaps the problem is that old real estate saw: "location, location, location." Finally, the fact that Belgium – a first world industrialized nation by anyone's standards – is in the bottom five for water quality is very interesting as well. What's causing that to happen? I am certain they aren't emptying chamberpots into the streets and drawing water from the same rivers into which their sewage is released without treatment. So what is causing it? |

If you want to make such a water plant, You could go the the hardware store and get a couple of blue electrical boxes for processing buildings and pump house, some 1/2 inch or 3/4 inch PVC pipe for smoke stacks for the buildings, some PVC pipe end caps for storage tanks, and a couple of feet of No. 12 and No. 14 solid copper wire for pipes, you could use 1/2 inch pvc pipe and fittings for larger pipes. How that sound for making a plant you could get it all for about $25 USD |

He who controls the desalination plants will control the world, I suspect, soon. |

Great idea. Doesn't sound too complicated and would make a great thematic board! Good old CMG Otilium Refinery could definitely be pressed into service as a Water Plant… White tanks, light blue logos (a simple stylized drop of water) and yellow piping. A couple of industrial and/or admin building with the same logos (CMG other ARC fleet buildings or Old Crow buildings) and Bob's you uncle!
Consider scratchbuilding a piece of river with piping coming out of the water… Or a simple circular artificial sediment settling pond… |

As another note, you could kill two birds with one stone by using nuclear powered desalination plants. All desalination needs is heat to boil the water away, and nuclear power plants make lots of heat as a byproduct of power generation. You get electricity and fresh water at the same time! |
