I've been having a good time building, painting etc, 6mm Sci FI for my Hammer's Slammers game for Cold Wars and I wanted to know what you can tell me about 2mm SciFi? I like the ease of painting 6mm, I like the cost, I like the amount of space it takes up… etc.. So who plays 2mm, what rules do you use, who makes it etc… Thanks Moe |

On the (very distant) backburner I have a 2mm Star Wars big battle project. Using Irregular for most things, but some of Germy's 2-3mm sci-fi walkers for AT-ATs and AT-STs, and some DLD fighters that were once going to be A-Wings in another project actually worked out ok as snowspeeders. Rules were going to be the sci-fi company rules from TooFatLardies (originally GYFTOOMF, now Quadrant 13); might also use Future War Commander for bigger battles. There are also true 3mm lines too now; besides Germy, Oddzial Osmy does them and some Shapeways makers. For 2mm, Irregular is your main choice unless you go for Victorian Science Fiction, and then you also have Brigade Models UK and their Land Ironclads line. |

In general, you can use any rules that work for 6mm with 2mm or 3mm. Dirtside is my fave, but other folks also like Future War Commander, Command Decision, and whatnot. I can't speak for 2mm, but I have a lot of 3mm stuff up on Shapeways: link |

I didn't even think of 3mm….. SO much to learn.. Keep up the suggestions.. Thanks Moe |

I tried 2mm, frankly too small for me. At that scale I can't distinguish Pike & Shotte musketeers from SciFi infantry unless it's power armor, in which case they can also look like a Fantasy ogre. At 3mm, believe it or not, there's more detail and distinction between figures that makes it more worth gaming IMHO. |

I have Javalin's giant cyber tanks (NOT OGREs) that I use with picoarmor scifi to play, well, Ogre. He has lots of other good stuff up there too, give him a look. As for rules, I personally am considering sci-fi 5Core Brigade Commannder, even though it is not out yet. 1 base = 1 company, easy to do the whole Hammer's Slammers. |

any sources for 6mm or 3mm not-ogres? I looked thru Javelin's site and only say regular vehicles. |

Here's my shop: link And here's my blog, where I irregularly and haphazardly post updates on stuff I'm designing: javelin98.blogspot.com @Whitphoto: I pulled the not-OGREs down to do some revamping and haven't put them back up yet, but I can certainly do some work on them this weekend and see if I can have something ready for you to look at by Monday! |

I have a fair amount of his ground forces and they are excellent. You can use fleet scale fighters as well. 6mm tanks become superheavies…etc. The 08 infantry is fairly detailed. You can tell the Russians have ak-47s for example. |

No rush Javelin, its more of a long term project for a con next year. It seems all my hobby time this year is spoken for already with some kickstarters coming in. |

A lot of people base up 2/3mm with 1 tanks/base which really means you are playing 6mm games on a smaller table. I prefer to base 3 tanks/base = 1 platoon or even higher level formation. Each to his own. 2/3mm is great for higher level games. I have four armies about Division level. Two Star Wars armies using micro machine AT-ATs for one and Monopoly figures for the Clone Wars. An Alien army using Irregulars 2mm SF (note: Irregular SF is closer to 3mm) and finally an generic SF army using tanks from the Fortress America boardgame. |

I have fine 3mm (1/600) models from O8 in my offer and I personally think that they are completly outstanding: fine detailed and They are very useful for games such like Future War Commander, but I know that some of my customers use them in my PMC 2640 game (using optional multi-figure bases rule). The range is here for preview: link Regards, Marcin G. |

Thanks Cloud. I do notice a big price different between manufacturers. 15 for $4.25 USD for some and over $1 USD for 1 mini on others. Interesting. |

On the Shapeways stuff, the designers' hands are somewhat tied by Shapeways' pricing model. For example, Frosted Ultra Detail has a fixed set-up cost of $5 USD per product, plus an additional amount that scales linearly with volume of material used. The designer then gets to add their markup. For me, I add a dollar to everything I make, so even if I dropped my commission to zero, it would still be hard to be competitive with Picoarmor/O8. That's one reason why my stuff is in larger packs, since it helps spread that set-up charge out across the individual pieces. However, for my stuff, at least, I'm working out a production agreement with an established manufacturer in the UK to make my 3mm minis in pewter. Once that's all set up, I'll be making an announcement here! |

Didn't Irregular Minis have a range for 2mm and some cheap and cheerful rules for same a while ago? |
