I recently finished off these terrific Bugbears (available from Splintered Light). Bob Olley was a name I was familiar with for a very long time but I did not realise how significant he is in the 'history' of miniature sculpting. He certainly has a unique signature style which I happen to like a lot – evident by my buying preference which was then oblivious to the shared creator.

Note on scale: These chaps are sold as 20mm. To me, they are simply large Bugbears in 15mm. In 28mm, not so sure – they look too tough and mean to be goblin size. All in the eye…

They look like tough customers. Nice work!

I really like the muted colors. How did you achieve that? Did you use inks?

Yeah, I've always liked those sculpts! Great job of bringing them to life!

PrivateSnafu12 Feb 2015 10:00 a.m. PST

Wonderful! You've done great justice to them. Would you be willing to post a picture of one standing next to a typical 15mm figure?

Jimboba13 Feb 2015 8:56 a.m. PST

Thanks to all.

Yes Dale, inks, washes and paint.

Private Snafu, here's a comparison shot with a few other scales. Note: Apart from the Pirate, I'd happily use all these together on the same table. (The scale police will be coming for me now!)

Left to Right: 10mm GW Warmaster Orgre (work great with 15mm too!), 15mm Essex Viking, SLM 20mm Bugbear, Foundry 28mm Pirate, finally, one of my oldest minis, a 25/28mm Ogre (from Grenadier I think).

Jimboba,

You are such a heretic! Thanks!

There's no school like the Old School, and Mr Olley is the headmaster!
In an age of detailed and precise, yet increasingly uniform sculpting, I find myself appreciating Olley's individual style all the more.

I particularly like how his 'bad guys' always look like they're thoroughly enjoying their villainy.
You've done the little buggars proud, Jimboba.

Couldn't agree more Norman on your comment about Mr Olley's bad guys. Just unpackaged some more new arrivals from SLM including some Bob Olley goblins and they are even cheekier looking.
