She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, another for How the West Was Won. I'm taking the OP literally and only considering those that directly reflect on American history/heritage.

Greatest movie ever made: Lawrence of Arabia

I have Casablanca in my top 5 as well. But the poll leaves open what constitutes an "American movie." Is it the message of the movie, or just its Hollywood origin? Some other movies I would pick have been mentioned….The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance and Star Wars. I would add Ben Hur and Tora, Tora, Tora.

The Wizard of Oz. (Though I also think Citizen Kane is a good one).

Adjusted for inflation, Gone With The Wind is still the #1 top grossing movie, Star Wars #2.

If you're talking about modern America; Slacker, Diner, Fandango, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Breakfast Club

Need to add Sneakers to that list as it's even more current-events related!

Being a Brit, I would hazard votes for

The Searchers
American Graffiti
Once Upon A Time in America

Weasel12 Feb 2015 1:10 p.m. PST

Commando.

I regret nothing!

So what you're all saying is – there ain't no definitive Great American Movie? Just a very wide divergence of options.

Probably straying from the premise here…But as an Irishman growing up without experiencing the US till later in life I think that apart from a bunch of TV shows these movies probably most shaped my perception of the States.

American Graffiti,
Once Upon a Time in America
On the Waterfront
Gone With the Wind
Bonnie and Clyde
To Kill a Mockingbird
Rebel Without a Cause
Fargo

Funny though I feel a lot of Spielberg movies centred around home town living in the US influenced my idea of what the States is actually like. with kids cycling around their neighbourhoods: E.T. Goonies, Close Encounters, Back to the Future, Gremlins, Jaws…

Gettysburg, Glory, any of the host of John Wayne movies. Princess Bride would be a contender.

For my wife she always told me that if I got orders to deploy that I should play The Patriot before letting her know (so that would be my vote- though I understand as a historian that the history is off, but it is a movie).

Another vote for She Wore a Yellow Ribbon-a western, a John Wayne Movie, the best of the cavalry trilogy. It's kind of a coming together movie.

Nothing more American in baseball, and while there are tons of great baseball movies, my favorite for sheer wonder is The Natural, with apologies to Field of Dreams.

A double bill which best defines America:
Mr. Smith Goes to Washington followed by Raging Bull.
Rod Robertson.

Any Western with John Wayne?

I really prefer Casablanca – my all time favorite movie – but this is about perception of America/Americans IMO.

Great Gatsby.

Neither movie really is "great" in itself but the novel they are based on is IMO "The Great American Novel".
