Great suggestions from Mexican Jack … my favourite American Movie would be Some Like it Hot but in a wartime conext, Casablanca has a wonderfully immersive feel. Gone with the Wind is right up there for the same reasons. Phil |

I love LOTM, but for a celebration of American manhood, I like 'Open Range' with Kevin Costner and Robert Duvall. BTW, is it just me, or does Robert Duvall look just like the Pemmican indian? |

Greatest Movie about capturing the spirit of America? King Kong Find something truly amazing and commercializing the heck out of it only to destroy it in the end. Oh and it is one great adventure film to boot. |

Gone with the Wind till Star Wars came out. Why Star Wars gets the nod. It and Jaws both set up the wide release summer movie blockbuster pattern that has been the norm ever since. What Star Wars has over Jaws is the marketing – it set the standard for movie marketing ever since. |

My first thought was Casablanca, but there have been a lot of great candidates mentioned. There have also been many that I can only assume are meant as jokes… |
zippyfusenet | 12 Feb 2015 8:27 a.m. PST |
I love the '92 Last of the Mohicans, but it has a limited cast of characters, it doesn't cover all of America. I love Little Big Man, but it's not really exactly a western, it's a take on a western. My vote is for The Outlaw Josey Wales. It's a western. It features a broad cast of Great American Characters. And it ends with the ultimate triumph of the hero, over all adversity, for the salvation of the good. You just can't get any Greater American Movie than that. Actually, I was just quoting TOJW's script yesterday, to my boss. The 'endeavor to persevere' speech. So many great quotes in that script. |

"It may not be an accurate summation of the USA, but as a Brit, it is everything I imagine America SHOULD be!" Quite right, which was why I picked it too. "I'll tell you one thing. There's nothing like building up an old automobile from scratch and wiping out one of those Detroit machines. That'll give you a set of emotions that'll stay with you, you know what I mean? Those satisfactions are permanent." |
