I finally got in a couple of games of Infinity N3 last week – looking to get in a couple more next week.

I owned the rulebooks for 2nd edition, but never played more than a demo. N3 just feels that much more polished, and the miniatures have continued to improve to a point that I just had to own some.

I played a 200pt Military Orders force and was soundly trounced both times! Making some improvements for next time (like actually using the Link team rules) and going back for more pain.

Anyone else get a chance to try out N3?

Not yet, but my figures are built, cleaned, and primed. Hopefully in the next month or so after I am done with the stuff for the WW II Fireball Apocalypse game I am running at Cold Wars.

Have gotten in several games of N3 and so far I like it. I hadn't played 2nd ed long enough to have any emotional attachment so that helps.

I picked up the 2nd edition books and never played. I got into a group recently but waited for N3 to buy and start playing. I've gotten in about 10 games between the IceStorm intros and from 120 points to 300 points with my own models. I like the game and now it's a matter of learning the minor details about the game and my faction to get better.

I haven't played N3 but bought the first edition when it came out and have been playing it since then. It looks like N3 does some improvements but changes somethings in ways I don't like. Getting rid of the surprise shot for troops in camo and so forth seems weird. And making close combat more accessible is something I don't like.

One of the things I really like about the game is how impractical it was to get into close combat. Even TAGs couldn't just lumber in against a light infantry without some concern about taking damage.

Close combat does occur, even in this day and age. British troops used a bayonet charge in one battle in Afghanistan in the past 10 years.

Getting to close combat is still pretty hard unless you know what you are doing, but it can be a bit more decisive once you get there. It's not a bunch of tripping over each others feet and stumbling about.

I have a few games of N3 in, including 3 at the Houston Dire States event last month.
It certainly helps to streamline the game, and allow it to move a bit faster.

Surprise shot changed a bit, but it's not necessarily for the worse. Before, you could shoot and hope to kill the other model, or it would get shots back at you as normal rolls. Low Burst weapons suffered using this mechanic.

Now, surprise shot imposes a -3 to ANY ARO action the other model takes, including dodges. This makes it harder for them to hit you in return fire.

I love it, but there is a growing number of items that need FAQ due to interactions overlooked, or just maybe not explained as thoroughly as some would like.

Playing MO I will be attempting to get into CC at some point this year!

Based on how things when the last couple of games its not easy and I'm going to have to figure out some tricks to pull it off. Too bad I don't have access to smoke grenades, as that seemed like a great way to do it.

But yes, it seems like CC strong troops should be more reliable in HTH combat if they can make it there. Fortunately all my CC troops also have guns!

"Close combat does occur, even in this day and age. British troops used a bayonet charge in one battle in Afghanistan in the past 10 years."

Yeah, one battle in 10 years.

In the last 10 years, nearly, of playing Infinity we have had close combat occur 4 times. Only one time was it a good outcome for the attacker and that is when my Caskuda attacked an Invincible.

I found that it was rare that models were able to fire back after a surprise shot as they were usually out of action.

I've been playing a game or two of N3 once a week, 200 to 250 points and focusing on areas of major change. Played a game or two with lots of hackers, another game with every CC-capable troop in the game (Japanese versus Greeks, it was fugly).

Learned that you should NOT attempt to engage a CC monster even with another CC monster. With the new Critical rules (if both sides crit, no damage), there was a lot of blades locked against each other.
