For many years I have looked everywhere for Sudanese footsoldiers wearing a quilted jerkin with sword and Hippo hide shield.
Like this from the osprey

I can get figures close to the horseman but the prize I am hunting is the footman.

Help TMP, you're my only hope.

Not quite the same but have you looked at Eureka Abyssinians?

SJDonovan09 Feb 2015 5:02 a.m. PST

Maybe Minifigs Dervishes from the Colonial Wars range: link

ACW?

Yes My apologies for the crosspost to the ACW page. My mistake I saw after it posted.

I have the Eureka Abyssinians. Many lovely figures but just not quite.

The Minifigs Dervish set above has the fellow on the right. One of my preferred figures. His shield is a segmented pattern on the front. I was hopeing (to be spoilt) and get a figure with a shield like the Beja.
Many thanks sirs.

Which Osprey is that picture from?

deflatermouse09 Feb 2015 8:13 p.m. PST

For some reason this is in the OSprey MaA 471
Armies of the Adowa Campaign 1896

Cant help re 25mm but Castaway Arts have these in 28mm. Very nice and unusual(see Western Sudan range).

I was hoping if there was something from Arab Conquest or Dark Ages ranges which might suit?
Even if it was Carolingian or Saxon or Arab or Chinese?

Minifigs Syrian Infantry from the Feudal Europe and the Crusades range might be another option but you would need to file off some of the shield bosses. link

"25mm" should have read "15mm" in my post.

We did a range of Sub-Saharran Moslems in 15mm a decade ago. I have only some cavalry left, Bornu types in padded armor.

The molds were given to a manufacturer in Florida. Battleground. I have not seen him in a few years.

Dammit.

I mean, really? Would you have any pictures?
Thank you.

I had those Minifigs fellows for my Pathans which I gave to a friend.

SubSaharan (Mali, Songhai, Ghana , Bornu, Hasa States) were similar with Almond shields for regular foot and cavalry being common. Round shields were common among feudal and levy troops. Quilt was common because the trend was to fire mass volleys of un-flighted arrows with poison tips. There was also a commented difference on the use native smaller African horses compared to the horses with Arabian blood in them. Some battles victory was attributed to the size difference in them.

Colors in the Ghana-Mali area were noted as being bright green, yellow and bright red.

Thank you RudyNelson for the info. Is there a single source for this or is it taken from several places?

I have had it suggested to talk to Irregular which I think is a very good idea.
Seeing as they have other Quilted Cavalry figures. Maybe a possibility?

Rudysnelson12 Feb 2015 4:39 p.m. PST

The information was gathered from several sources and released in a Special edition of Time Portal passages magazine on Sub-Saharan Ancient and medieval history. lqater I haad the castings sculted, then due to money concerns I gave the castings to another company.

Do not forget Conrad Cairns book on the region "The African Knights". Very good book to get. As is many of the books in the Ibadan series out of the main university in Nigeria.
