I also wonder what the "old" Smolensk post road looked like at that time…

there are a lot of nice pictures at the Library of Congress site, that are worth looking at whenever reading about the Ogre's invasion of Russia or setting up wargames.

By the way, I have an explanation for some of the Russian's weird decisions that taxed Napoleon's logic and decisions.
Take a guess as to the crop growing in the field shown here.

Imagine setting fire to a thousand acres of this with the scorched-earth policy and then trying to decide what strategy to use!! No wonder how it looks confusing now. They were too busy sending out for muchies and pizza!

@1968billsfan

I'm thinking Napoleon could have used all that hemp to make rope for bricoles.

Thanks, Ralpher…I didn't realize that was available--I have bits scattered around in various books.

Still not sure what to do next--I was thinking of Utitsa (Poles are a nice change of pace) in 6mm @ 1:2 w/1:285 ground scale, but the kurgan is a bit far from the village. The Raevski redoubt in 28mm scale would be something as well, but too big to be playable. Shrug.
