Hi, I been reading the forums for a while. And finally decided to make a account. Anyway heres some shanty buildings I made. All the buildings have a wood frame. With scrapbooking card for the siding and roof. And pipes are just hard paper straws. Right now I have ten built. I think twenty should be enough for a small shanty town.
Do I have to seal the card before painting to stop warping? |

I painted mine, just with the kids acrylic paint from the $2 USD shop. Didn't seal. Works well. |

I think I'm going to end up just priming and painting them. Deflatermouse I always use craft paints to do my scenery too. |

Hi Having done some similar stuff, it doesnt warp that much and as its a shanty town the scruffier the better. I used cheap pound store spray paints to undercoat and then do the metal then cheap brown acrylics watered down to get the dirty feel then the same with orange to add rust streaks. |

I'd spray undercoat them before paint. John T |

They are looking pretty shabby! Nice modeling. |

Nice work, I would undercoat and then paint as well, the paper straws are a great idea as pipes. |

You should post pictures of HOW you built those as well, they look really good. Don't hold back, you made an account to show us those, when you should have ran when you had the chance! Too late now! :D |

Other than sticking some toy car tyres on the roof they're perfect paint all colours tp your hearts content :) Cheers happy gaming. |

When I was in Africa I noticed a lot of rocks on rooves. They were to hold down the corners of the sheets as they were cheaper than nails and more readily available. And the occasional car tyre. |

Nice results from very low cost material. |
Mattw3385 | 08 Feb 2015 7:46 p.m. PST |
TK 421,Your right about being cheap. The wood and card costed me ten dollars max. And I have enough left over to make may be make like 25 more buildings. The paper straws were I think $2.50 USD for eighteen straws. |

I just finished another shanty today and I took some pics of it. First I made the top and bottom frame.
Then I connect the top and bottoms with vertical pieces of wood and I added more support pieces.
Later after the glue dried all I had to do was add some corrugated card and its done.
One thing I used to speed up measuring and cutting. Was this measuring gauge. Its alot quicker then a tape measure. It has sizes from 1/8th to 2 inch. Which is great for 15mm.

Those are really nice. Great work! |
MrHarold | 24 Feb 2015 8:11 a.m. PST |
Wow, that's really impressive! They're probably built better than real shanties! |
Mattw3385 | 25 Feb 2015 2:34 p.m. PST |
Yeah, I wanted those shanties to hold up to being dropped. And be able to handle miniatures on sitting on top. While being abld to withstand the dreaded dropped tape measure. |

Those look really great you need to post pictures when you have them all painted up. :D |
BIG WALLY | 26 Feb 2015 4:03 p.m. PST |
You will need to paint BOTH sides of the paper! Just use some of the cheap craft paint or spray can if you MUST do it in a hurry. VERY nice work and VERY clever as well!!! I'm thinking a little bit of warping might not be too bad! WALLY |

I know these are not the best pictures. But here's a test painting of a shanty. I don't know if should try to have a uniform scheme overall or complete randomness.

Looking good. Maybe do some heavier drybrushing with a metallic? |
Mattw3385 | 02 Mar 2015 11:11 p.m. PST |
McWong73, I think its my lighting. But I did do some drybrushing with a gun metal color. I should go back over with a light silver color. Today I got some pipes painted up today.

The short white plastic cocktail stirs that come in the clear plastic boxes make nice stock for pipes, conduits or framework. The assorted color packages do offer options too.

Today I finished painting the last of my shanties. Here's a couple pics. I know they are not best.
And here's one from about three feet away.
Patron Zero, That's a good idea. I'm going to have get some to make chimneys. |
