The Great War Strategy Board Game launches on Kickstarter!

The Plastic Soldier Company will launch the game with a crowdfunding campaign – commencing Friday, 6th February.
The launch of The Great War Strategy Board Game will begin on Kickstarter with a campaign to fund the pre-production and publication of the game, setting the foundation for future development of the line. The campaign has an initial funding goal of £25,000.00 GBP and will end on 8th March.

The Great War Strategy Board Game
The Great War is the latest adaptation of Richard Borg's tried and tested Command and Colours game system bringing the epic battles of the First World War to the gaming table. Players can command armies of detailed, hard plastic, 1/100th scale miniature figures representing British and German troops of the time.

The confusion of battle and challenges of command and control are provided through command cards, combat cards and HQ tokens that limit what can be done each turn and custom dice are used to resolve the effects of any combat that occurs.

The game includes scenarios to allow the re-enactment of battles such as Loos, The Somme and Vimy Ridge as well as many other actions. The board can be reconfigured using terrain tiles to reflect any battlefield of the period and allows additional scenarios to be created.

This is the first game in a series that will in time cover all aspects of the war on land with additional figures including cavalry, tanks and artillery and additional nationalities (France, USA and Russia) being added in subsequent modules.

Future expansions will add other new mechanics and game elements, and open up more opportunities for player-vs-player action.

Pledges and Rewards
In the The Great War Strategy Board Game project on Kickstarter, backers can choose to support the game at many different pledge levels.
The project starts with five initial stretch goals of between £25,000.00 GBP and £125,000.00 GBP and will be reviewed throughout depending on the success of the campaign.

The Great War Strategy Board Game is planned to ship to backers in June 2015,

This is our first venture into the world of boardgames. Hopefully the start of many boardgame ventures.

Link that works!

Very interesting, I love the cross over of hexes and figures.

will these figures also form a stand alone line of miniatures that can be bought separate from he boardgame?

VonTed07 Feb 2015 6:11 a.m. PST

Poor, poor Battlefront.

McWong7307 Feb 2015 6:22 a.m. PST

You so have my money. This is the combination of one of my favourite companies and one of my gavourite game designers.

Nick B07 Feb 2015 6:23 a.m. PST

Will the figures be exclusive to the game set or will they be available to buy separately in due course?

I like the idea of the game but am very underwhelmed by the extras you get for putting more money in or the stretch goals.

Seems very orientated at the Trade – I mean who is going to want two identical sets, let alone 6!

79thPA Supporting Member of TMP07 Feb 2015 7:37 a.m. PST

Did they say whether these are 15s or 1/72?

ernieR07 Feb 2015 7:43 a.m. PST

79thPA – 1/100 , other PSC models marked as that are 15mm so i assume 15mm .

Nick B – since the board is very generic and terrain is added by placing hex counters , 2 sets allows you to have a larger battlefield . the 6 set pledges are meant for retailers .

Guthroth07 Feb 2015 12:09 p.m. PST

Ok, I'm in.

coopman07 Feb 2015 5:35 p.m. PST

I'm in too!

desert dude07 Feb 2015 7:32 p.m. PST

I am in also, I think Command and Colors would work great with World War One. Getting in on the Early Bird saves 10 pounds also!

Privateer4hire07 Feb 2015 8:25 p.m. PST

WOW!

Ascent08 Feb 2015 3:50 a.m. PST

Looks like it funded this morning. When I backed it was £50.00 GBP short, and its passed that now.

I had started making notes for a 1918 version of memoir 44 but never got as far as playtesting. Don't need to now.

Royston Papworth08 Feb 2015 5:12 a.m. PST

Ok, so it's the first Kickstarter I've ever backed.

One question though, I wanted to add the extra figures, on top of the basic game, but it doesn't seem possible.

Am I missing something?

CATMAN208 Feb 2015 6:51 a.m. PST

Will at PSC here
Yes, the miniatures sets will be available separately ( they are already on the kickstarter)

CATMAN208 Feb 2015 6:53 a.m. PST

@Bindon Blood – I think just click on the extra miniatures pledges and they will be added to your pledge in the pledge manager when funded. There is no extra shipping charge for extra miniature sets!

svsavory08 Feb 2015 1:22 p.m. PST

Looks good, the C&C system should work well for WWI.

Royston Papworth09 Feb 2015 5:51 a.m. PST

Thanks Will. I shall give it a try, if I can't I'll wait for them to become available 'normally'.

After all, it's only greed on my part. I won't actually 'need' them..

Or, will I….? 8^)

jameshammyhamilton09 Feb 2015 11:24 a.m. PST

There is an update on the Kickstarter page explaining how to add extras to your pledge. Kickstarter only allows one pledge apparently but you can over pledge so if you have an early bird game for £49.00 GBP then you can add £15.00 GBP to have an extra set of miniature or £16.00 GBP to get a shirt or both.

There is also now an option to get a second board and second set of tiles.

Das Sheep09 Feb 2015 5:30 p.m. PST

I am very excited. Once my mid month pay comes through I am in for some. Getting at least one game for myself, might get more to share with friends.

The command and colors rules are so fun and quick, well, other variants, and I love the PSC figures!

Conrad Kinch10 Feb 2015 5:46 p.m. PST

I was trying to work out what size the board was exactly. I took quick screen shot here.

And it looks like it's twelve by eleven.

CATMAN211 Feb 2015 9:14 a.m. PST

Yep 12 by 11 hexes

CATMAN211 Feb 2015 9:14 a.m. PST

i've just posted an update on the Kickstarter page which might also be helpful here:-

People are asking why buy extra mapboards or extra miniatures sets:-
"Epic" scenarios involving 2 boards and extra miniatures will be created in future expansions and some will be available for free download on the PSC games/ The Great War website. In fact, one of the initiatives we will be putting in place is to encourage Great War gamers to create scenarios and send them into us. If they are published (either in an expansion or as a free download ) the author will be given a Plastic Soldier Company voucher.
The other reason to buy extra miniatures sets is they also suit the tabletop gaming market. Personally, most of my Commands and Colors Ancients gaming is with my 15mm wargames armies on Kallistra hex terrain. This is what i will be doing with The Great War too!
The mapboard is 12 hexes by 11 hexes – Memoir base board is 13 by 9. The hexes are pretty much the same size.
For those who pledge for the Deluxe painted version – on the stretch goals they will get the metal Generals painted but not the tanks
The tanks will be in injection moulded hard plastic. They will be very basic kits to assemble in the minimum number of parts and plug fit with no need for glue
The tanks (and other future models like artillery) will be in the same scale as the figures – 1/100th scale of wargamer's 15mm
The plastic miniatures will be in the relevant coloured plastic – so in the core game, British in Khaki and Germans in dark grey. French will be in Bleu Horizon in their expansion. Other models like tanks will also be in the relevant coloured plastic

Oh grand, another commands and colors series to collect, I just finished ancient and Napoleonic……

Rudysnelson12 Feb 2015 6:11 p.m. PST

Do not forget the SYW/AMRev version that is in the pipeline as well. A lot to collect.
For a store it is hard to get much of the C n C items. I just got a set of the hardboard Ancient map for the store. The only item I have left besides some Battlelore items.

CATMAN213 Feb 2015 8:54 a.m. PST

I've just posted some computer renders of the British miniatures on the Kickstarter page: link

German renders to follow!

jameshammyhamilton20 May 2015 7:46 a.m. PST

From the PSC Games Facebook feed.

We are delighted and proud to announce that The Great War boardgame is to be launched on time (even a little ahead of schedule!) at the UK Games Expo in Birmingham on 29th-31st May. Kickstarter backers can either collect at Games Expo (by responding to an email survey to be sent out this week) or Kickstarter rewards will start shipping from Monday 1st June.

The game will be available on general release from The Plastic Soldier Company webstore link and all good retailers in the UK and Europe from 8th June but there will be a limited number of games to purchase at the Games Expo. The US launch will be at The World Boardgaming Championships in Pennsylvania 4th-9th August where Messrs Borg and Townshend will be on hand to demo the game and answer questions and the game will be available to buy.

There is a time delay on the German and French language versions so German and French language KS backers will get an English language game and an emailed relevant language copy of the rules. When actual French and German versions appear later in the summer they will also get sent one of these as well. Deluxe painted versions will take a few more weeks as the miniatures have only just gone to Sri Lanka for painting (we obviously had to wait for the plastic sprues to appear!). So, Kickstarter deluxe backers will get sent a full copy of the game now (with unpainted minis inside) and then an additional painted set of minis will be sent onto them as soon as they arrive back from the painting service in about 9-12 weeks

We are just about to undertake a major revamp of the PSC website and webstore so the KS £10.00 GBP future expansion voucher stretch goal will be emailed out at a later date. If we do it now, they will not be valid in the new webstore!

Again, a huge thank you to all our Kickstarter backers for their help and support in bringing The Great War to life!
