Discovered my father's WWII dog tag in an old cup. Hadn't seen this for donkey's years. Really happy I found this again.

I was wondering if anyone knows what these NZ dog tags were made of. It is almost a hardened leather like material – doesn't feel like metal. Also, what should I do to preserve it?

Brian,

This web site contains your answer:

They were made of a compressed fiber that was waterproofed.

For preservation you should contact the NZ national archives. They should be able to either help you or steer you to someone in NZ who can.

That was a fortuitous find.
