Hi My FLGS has both WAB1 and WAB2 on sale. Never played these rules but I wanted to give it atry at least once. Which one should I go for : 1 or 2? thanks Pascal |

Pick whomever you can find to play against, but I'd definitely shoot for version #1. |

WAB1 (or 1.5, the yellow one) is the best. WAB2 is by far the more beautiful book, but is atrociously edited, riddled with mistakes and omissions and more geared towards tournament play then 1.5. |

I personally like 2.0 better. Your mileage may vary. I am a tournament player (albeit a very bad one!) Don |

Our group changed to Clash of Empires (COE). Played WAB in all versions for years. When the character (leader) miniatures became all powerful and the special rules questionable in some cases we changed over to COE. The character now are leaders, not superman. Romans have to build their army like a Roman army, not pick the best and leave the rest. Barbarians we have won scenario with, not become sword meat fodder on the tabletop. The list are free in most cases with lots to choose from on the web site. And those weird march or spinning unit rules in WAB are removed in COE, if the units try the off angle charge they lose distance, all predetermined so the "rule lawyers" cannot enter the unit movement arena. Several games shown on blog (link below). Huge scenarios of 5-6000 points per side. COE handles the large and small tabletop action. Best, your miniatures basing same as WAB. link |

I totaly agree with TMPWargamerabbit. We did the same in our games group. But if you have to choose a WAB version, I would also go with 1 (or 1.5) |

I'd go with 1 or 1.5 as well. |

But WAB remains a better option for Dark Ages games, in which you want to represent armies numbering in the hundreds, and in which leaders and characters should therefore be a significant presence and influence. |

I also use WAB 1.5. It's a good, solid game, and I don't see the issues with "overstrong leaders/characters" that some others seem to have. I also recommend that you use the points system as a guide, but not as an absolute when building your army. I have no problem with a player or players going 10% or even 20% over the agreed upon level, and I've also run games where no points values were used. Just bring what you have and we'll play. Sometimes I also design and run unbalanced games in order to introduce gamers to different tactical concepts. But it's still one of my 3 preferred Ancients rules. 1.) WAB 2.) Basic Impetus 3.) Dux Bellorum |

As an added tip up you might want to try War and Conquest, which is actually better than 1.5 and practically the same ruleset. |
