I've been busy finishing off (yet another) Roman army. This one is from minis I've bought in batches on eBay and finished and based for my own "To the Strongest!" rules or Impetus.

Great units Simon, the basing and washes does give them an on campaign look.

Nice. But why are some of the legionaries in the testudo holding their shields upside down?

Having struggled with getting the tiny lettering on those transfers upright, myself, I was amused to see the shields on the testudo. I suppose, though, that a rectangular scutum works just as effectively upside down as it does the right way up!

Best, Simon

A great looking collection, the mud is a nice touch. 8-)

Hi Stuart, I started to muddy-up my Napoeonics, but it has spread to my Ancients. There's nothing quite like spending 15 minutes putting on a shield transfer and paintign up to the edge of it, and then half covering it up with mud and staining! :-)

What have they ever done for us?

:)

Great work there Simon. Really impressive the way that you unify the disparate painted elements with washes and basing. I salute your use of muddying but I fear that I would not have the confidence to do likewise.

Cheers

…at a tournament today I found myself facing the above army (which I'd loaned out) across the table. I'm afraid I gave them a very tough time!

ps Hi Mike!

I should have commented earlier Simon – another fine bunch of fellows. As you say the Auxilia are the pick of the bunch, great characters. I'm so glad I don't have to paint a testudo!

Yes the Testudo- there are 40 shields on that! Imagine applying that many transfers….
