… Mil Mi-28NE Havoc attack helicopters. "The Iraqi Ministry of Defence (MoD) announced on 1st February that it had taken delivery of a second consignment of Mil Mi-28NE attack helicopters. The Ministry released a video showing two Mi-28s being unloaded from an Antonov An-124 transport aircraft operated by Russia's Volga-Dnepr Airlines. The Iraqi MoD confirmed on 30 August 2014 that it had received the first consignment when it released a video showing three helicopters being prepared in a hangar with the help of Russian technicians. Although these helicopters have been seen flying over Baghdad since then, it is unclear if they have been used in action as yet…"

And if so … do the pilots have the training & courage to be effective ? After the showing that the Iraqis had vs Deash … May be the US would not let them have any or any more US birds. But nice of Mr. Putin to help out … He's just that kind of guy ! |

Crews are being trained up for these as well as Su-25 squadron recently acquired. The MI-35 Hinds have seen regular action with at least 1 destroyed. Several Mi-17s and Bell 406s have been shotdown. |

Hmmm, no money for bullets for their ground troops, or food either, so they are deserting in droves, if reports are true, but they're buying attack helos? Now, I'm not against the idea, or use of attack helos, per se, but I suspect someone's priorities are a bit misplaced. Man, I need to buy a plane ticket, to market a high-speed rail line to them…… |

The attack helos were ordered in 2012 before all this started (or at least before it got out of control). There's plenty more kit on order that hasn't been delivered yet – 36 x F-16, 24 x L159 light attack jets, 16 x TA-50 LIFT. The F-16s are effectively embargoed in the US. Time between contract signed and aircraft delivered is usually anywhere from 2 years or more. The SU-25 acquisition (as well as return of Iranian aircraft) was done in an extremely short time frame but it didn't include overhaul/upgrade, training or spares by the looks of things (squadron still not operational by the looks of it). |

Exactly … the Iraqis need capable ground forces … not sexy Russkie helos and strike aircraft. But like I said on another thread here, it's the "lip stick on a pig" sort of thing … The attack helos were ordered in 2012 before all this started At this point, it does not really matter, IMO … Until the Iraqis can field capable ground forces, they can't stop or even attrite Deash … How many times does NATO have to re-train them ? |
