I am designing a fantasy wargame, "Orc-at-Arms", and we had our first playtest. Pictures and a description below. We went for a quirky backstory: a portal to another dimension has opened in Northern England, circa 200 AD, and a horde of orcs have poured through. A Roman legion, backed up by local auxiliaries, has been dispatched to defeat the beasts. Some elves came through the portal, too, and are acting as allies and advisors to the Romans. We used Wargames Factory Romans and Barbarians, and GW's Lord of the Rings plastics. Some pictures here, and a link to the rest at my blog, link Thanks for looking!

I love stuff like "dimension rifts", etc. It makes for all manner of confrontations. My favorite in scifi is, of course, the "lost legion" story by Turtledove, the Videssos Cycle. Of course it is the legion that gets sent elsewhere, rather than "waiting" for fantasy critters to emerge into the Empire, as you have it…. |

Videssos Cycle-yup, I remember the Elf archer watching a cohort attack and said "They fight like army ants.." If you use magic, let the Eagle give a measure of protection. Looks Great!!! |

I have no issues with Romans vs Orcs even in historical games, Tolkien described Orcs and Goblins as looking like Huns and Mongols while fighting like Gauls. Not that I am building a Numidian army using Goblins… |

Thanks guys! Now, the reason I'm using these is because they're available, and nicely painted (great job Russ), but the dimension hopping, Romans v Fantasy Monsters is a lot of fun. Next game is either gonna be a big orc attack on a British town, or a Roman attempt to close the portal…which would involve some Briton magic users. @Skippy, great idea for the Eagle, will have to incorporate that into the next game. |
