As I understand it, this is the type Hannibal used.
However, the books I read say they are extinct. Are they?

The reason I ask is I was just watching one of those weird monster programs where they are searching the jungles of Cameroon. There were elephants living in the forests – which the narrator called forest elephants. Are they the same?
Or different?

There was a report in the eighties or nineties that stated that they were still around, but had migrated south and were staying clear of mankind. Now they're extinct! Go figure!

Forest elephants are not extinct, but the North African elephant is extinct. They are slightly different species.
