So as some of you may know I've just updated the catalog of my rule book collection. And I'm polling the membership for what rules out there are not in my list. And I see I have a category issue, so it got me thinking about how to define the various periods. First, if I have a lot of rules for a specific war it gets its own category (Vietnam, ACW, SYW). Otherwise it goes in a general "century" category (17th, 18th, 19th). Ancients are lumped in together. Pre-gunpowder is for rules that cover, say, 1500AD back to the dawn of time in one rule book. Horse & Musket are for rules covering 1600-1900. So (leaving aside air and naval) my categories now are: - Ancients
- Gladiators
- Medieval
- Pre-Gunpowder
- Renaissance
- Samurai
- English Civil War
- Pirates
- Horse & Musket
- 17th Century
- Seven Years War
- American Revolution
- 19th Century
- Napoleonics
- Crimean War
- Colonials
- American Civil War
- Old West/Plains Indian Wars
- Franco Prussian War
- 20th Century
- Spanish Civil War
- World War I
- World War II
- Vietnam
- Modern
The categories are not perfect. I might combine 17th/18th into Horse & Musket, maybe 19th as well. Thoughts? |

If you are looking for feedback, if you have "Horse and Musket", why do you also need all of the other categories that fall within that time frame, like ECW, Pirates, 17th C, SYW, etc.? |

30YW is at roughly the same time as ECW. So if you are going for granularity add TYW. personally I just assume have something like "Pike and Shot" for that period. Renaissance for Early Pike and Shot (Up throw the French Wars of religion), "18th Century" for all things H&M up through the French Revolution and Napoleonic for that period. I'd do 19th century for stuff 1815 up through 1900. |

So … just nudging the edge of the table as it were … my treasured 'Dark Age' (as I now must configure it 'European Dark Age and the Flowering of Islam' … ) – in English terms, say, Arthur to Godwinson – would be Ancient or Medieval? Chariot-ish? Or Plate Armour-ish? Phil |

@79thPA My initial thought was to distinguish rules for a very specific period (the SYW for example) from multi-period rules (Black Powder). But I think the "century" categories are redundant. 30YW is surely separate but I don't have any rules specifically for that conflict. I think they get lumped into Renaissance. Dark Ages: Yes I just lump them into Pre-Gunpowder. If more rules come out for just the dark ages I might make that a separate category. |

I think throwing in the outliers such as "pirates" or "gladiators" works fine. I think you don't need a separate ECW and renaissance category though. Honestly, your list just isn't very consistent and is kind of confusing. Ancient (Chariot/Biblical era to 400AD) Dark Ages (400AD-1000AD) Medieval (1000AD-1500AD) Renaissance (1500AD-1700AD) 18th Century (1700AD-1800AD) Napoleonic (1800AD-1815AD) 19th Century (1815AD-1900AD) WWI WWII Modern Ultra Modern Science Fiction Fantasy Maybe Subcategories in each for skirmish games? |

I'd probably hesitate to have "modern" mean everything from 1945 to today, except Vietnam but then it depends on how many modern games you own. |

Good point. There are only 40 or so non-Vietnam modern games on my list (not that I own them all yet) compared to over 200 for Napoleonics. |
