Among the new sets of miniatures of February, Crooked Dice offers you a nice simian cavalry unit in 28 mm.

Definitly a must for any Planet of the Apes collection.

Do you think the primates are capable of showing any understanding of, and kindness to, their horses?

Serious question. Previous PotA films seem to depict the gorillas as brutes, incapable of feelings. Use the horse until it died, use another one, then another, etc? Any good cavalryman/horseman knows horses need to be well catered for.

Such a question answered could help plot how the future of a planet of the apes pans out – a division between two 'classes' of primates for example, leading to a Very Apey Civil War type game. Just saying… grin

Glad you enjoyed them my friend.

About the "care" of the horses, imho and by memory, that job became for humans (slaves) or minor class monkeys.
The Gorilas only used them in war or training.

Showdown, my experience and exposure to the Planet of the Apes was thru the original movies in the '60s & '70s. I did not read the book which is almost inevitably different than the film interpretations so keep that in mind as I continue. In the films, the Gorilla Army mostly operated in the area local to Ape City. There was reference to an expedition into the waste lands but that was not a common venture. As Tango mentioned, it seems that the horses were looked at as a piece of equipment much like a helmet or leather belt. Just my impression…

zoneofcontrol and Tango01, I appreciate your answers. Thanks.

I like the PotA franchise and the 28mm figures that have been produced. The last three films (Timothy Rothes/Mark Wallenburg, and the most recent two) have explained a great deal in terms of how things happened but I still remember those 60s&70s Carlton Heston movies and so HAVE to factor in their characteristics when gaming them. The gorillas were brutes.

The gorillas' seem perfect candidates to unleash a coup d'état on the cleverer chimps and orangutans but their ignorance of matters like weapon maintenance or horse care is a weak point that their brute strength cannot overcome. Again, something to consider when looking to develop the wargaming aspect. Cheers.

Probably a situation the orangutans and chimpanzees fostered. laugh

Nice figures, but the horses look a little small to me.

In the films, the Gorilla Army mostly operated in the area local to Ape City.

In my PotA games, this was mostly the case, except for human-gathering excursions.

Probably a situation the orangutans and chimpanzees fostered.

No doubt. Since apes vs humans in PotA has a limited lifespan (without some heroic timetravelers), most of my games have been gorilla clan wars and chimpanzee/orangutan civilian insurrections.
