What is the significance of the names of two towns across from each other on the Mississippi? LaCrosse and LaCrescent? |

Quick and dirty search … "Lt. Zebulon Pike mounted an expedition up the Mississippi River for the United States. Pike recorded the location's name as "Prairie La Crosse." The name originated from the game with sticks that resembled a bishop's crozier or la crosse in French, which was played by Native Americans there." "The village of La Crescent came into being largely as the result of the great natural advantages afforded by its site. Just north of its location the river bluffs sweep back in a wide curve, approaching the river again about a mile to the south, thus forming a crescent shaped basin …" |

Not across the river from each other, but just a few miles down the Missouri river from Napoleon, Mo., is the town of Wellington, Mo. … and right between them is the tiny community of Waterloo. |
