Looking for recommendations for skirmish rules for the Crusader period, basically 1100-1250. Simple, fun, goofy, but with some degree of different weapon representation would be ideal. Something where a player may have a handful of figures each. Suggestions? |

Try these. I quite like the "Saga" rules: link Coukd probably also use the new Osprey ones, "Lion Rampant" |

My 'Sword and Dagger' rules might do? – they are free to download from link If not, I am sure there will be some rules that will do the trick for you! |

I second the recommendation for Saga, which are both simple and elegant rules that are well supported with an on-line forum. Rick |

Deus Vult is an unit based game which can play large, but it can also scale down well with fewer figures per unit. |

I've used the old Cry Havoc rules for minature Skirmish games |

What about "Lion Rampant" by Osprey? |

Cry Havoc would work. Here's a fan site with all the rules and scenarios. cryhavocfan.org Alternatively, and my fave, Song of Blades and Heroes. Just don't use any magic. |

Pig Wars has always given me a good game, with the D10 variant that's out there it can't be beat, in my opinion. |

We use a simple home grown rule set that we use for skirmish gaming. E-mail me and I will e-mail you a copy. msc1d@aol.com |

Battle troll or outlaws of Sherwood. Fun, simple, goofy, different weapons … Outlaws is probably better suited to the crusades. |

Saga has exploded onto the scene. And a fine set of Dark age/Crusader era skirmish rules they are. Every decent convention now has a Saga tournament it seems. Lots of folks are playing the rules….. all over. I live in the "sticks" and have found two other locals that have armies and play. Why play a game no one else does? Try SAGA! |

Third or fourth 'Lion Rampant'. Have the rules, read them multiple times, just finished my retinue. Now I have to get a game in! |

Played both Lion Rampant and Saga Both have their merits….Lion Rampant much easier to play whereas Saga has many more complexities. Saga only really works well as a two player game (IMHO) whereas we adapted Lion Rampant quite easily to multiplayer using card activation for turns. Although both games can be very frustrating if you are naturally unlucky at dice rolls, although you can mitigate against this to a certain extent in Saga. If you fail an order in Lion Rampant that's your turn over. Good Luck |

Going back to your original post -Although both are excellent games, I'm not sure if Lion Rampant or Saga fit the description. I don't think either one has much in the way of weapon differentiation and depending on what we consider a "handful" of figures they both require about 40-50 miniatures per side. If you are looking for a game where Figure A has a sword, and Figure B has an axe, where you have roughly a dozen figures on a side, Saga or Lion aren't what you are looking for. Outlaws of Sherwood, Cry Havoc, Song of Arthur and Merlin, the LOTR variant "Age of Trebuchets", or Mordhiem might all work with a little customization. |

Thanks to all who gave their input. Seemingly, in doing my own research based on the suggestions, Logain is correct. Saga and Lion Rampant seem to be a bit larger than what I am looking for. And perhaps I wasn't quite clear enough, each player should only have to run maybe 5-10 figures, tops. The Cry Havoc fan site has me perplexed about those rules, seems to be a lot of info there. I'll have to weed through it a bit. Another one I do own is Battlelust, which I had completely forgotten about before posing my question. |
