I need to make some modern roads, for Europe (primarily Germany), out of felt, and would like to know how long the white stripes down the middle are, and how much spacing they have between them?

From doing a bit of Googling, it appears they are about 4 – 6m long, and that there are variations of length and spacing, e.g. longer strips and spacing on the autobahns, and shorter on the smaller, two-lane roadways.

My guess is that they're probably about 4 – 5 meters long, and with an equal spacing of empty space, between the stripes, at least on the smaller roadways.

Also, it appears that the stripes are about 100mm – 150mm wide.

Does that sound about right?

Interestingly, and it's hard to tell definitively (since some pics aren't labeled), but it appears to me that white stripes are used down the center of the roads (instead of yellow, to denote two-way traffic, like is used in the USA), regardless of whether the traffic is flowing the same direction (on divided highways), or if there is opposing traffic on smaller roads (e.g. one lane in each direction).

Is that correct?

I do see examples of at least some roadways striped in yellow, or with a single, solid yellow line (hard to tell from some images, which aren't labeled, if these are in Germany, or other European countries).

I also see that some of the smaller roadways have no striping at all down their middle, but that most at least have the white, edge striping, to aid driving.

Finally, can anyone tell me how long the widely spaced strips are on the autobahns?

They appear to be at least 6m long, and perhaps 8m, with similar spacing in between.

4-6 meters long seems a bit long to me, but I never measured a line. A solid middle line means no passing, a solid and dashed line means the dashed side can pass. Dashed means either side can pass. I don't recall any yellow lines, Germans used white. Narrow, country roads typically don't have center lines, and like you observed sometimes not even edge striping.

I was originally thinking about 3m, but looking on-line again, on Google, a lot of the stripes appear to be about the length of a car.

A BMW is about 15', or so long, so that matches the 5m length pretty well.

Without checking actual data, your measurements appear to be roughly correct…

Yellow lines are used in building sites to override the whitel markings.

But of course we have norms for everything, so itīs actually quite easy to find the data :D

It depends! But there are official rules for road markings.

In Germany there are two types of Interrupted lines. The Schmalstrich (which separates lanes) and the Breitstrich (which separates lanes that are doing in different directions soon [Autobahn exit lanes for example]).

On Motorways the Schmalstrich is 15cm wide, on all other roads 12cm wide.
On Motorways the Breitstrich is 30cm wide, on all other roads 25cm.

The ratio between a stripe and no stripe is 1:2 on all normal strips of road. At intersections this can be 1:1.

Length of the stripes varies depending on the speed you are allowed to drive on the road. On Motorways it is 6m, inside towns it is 3m. At intersections, this can go down to 1,5m.

Hope this helps!

Cheers,

Burkhard

Thanks for the replies, and also the link.

That is great information.
