Try the Two Hour Wargames system. You can get a free trial of the basic system (you might have to make up a stat or two). But if you like it you can then pick up the books for the periods you want – Nam, WW2, SciFi etc. I really like them for this scope game. |

Try "Men Under Fire" by Frank Chadwick of Test of Battle Games. JAS |

It's pretty intense but Face of Battle is quite fun. |

Force on Force is mainly for post WW2 and ultramodern skirmishes but is certainly worth looking at. |

Force on Force by Ambush Alley games. It is a really great set of rules. easy to pick up good for modern forces against other modern forces or insurgents. Plenty of dice throwing and uses tactics to win no matter which side. ambushalleygames.net |

You mean a squad per side? Infinity. Yeah, Infinity is scifi. So scrape off all the technology and play the game without hackers or any of the rest of that. I think the 2nd edition would be better for converting back into a modern game, so drop me a PM and I will kick you the fan re-edit (which puts all the rules into a single sequence and file). |

FUBAR – it's free, and has rules and weapons for different genres, e.g. WWII, Vietnam, Sci-Fi. |

Yes, THW or we also use the old Tactical Commander if you can get your hands on it. Battalions in Crisis (revamped Tractics) would work as well. |
saltflats1929 | 29 Jan 2015 4:05 p.m. PST |
Old, but "battleground ww2". Very detailed for small units (standing or prone, weapon jams, fighting with light wounds, etc) if that is what you are looking for. |

If you want WW II man to man with solo I suggest THW Nuts! |
Weasel | 29 Jan 2015 5:12 p.m. PST |
FUBAR is like 1 page so it's an easy recommendation to make :) Even if you end up not liking it, well, it was 1 page. No big loss (and it's actually really good too) |

Make them play Point Blank until they like it (I wrote the system, so I am obviously biased-and I'm kidding!). This is what I did with my game club, so it works :) |

Skirmish sangin is man on man, squad sized, havent played though. Chain of command is platoon vs platoon, but looks nice. |

Operation Squad WW2 is set at that level, like the name suggests. |

Another vote for Flying Lead (I'm a big fan of the SoB&H engine). Doug |

I happen to have 20 copies of Tactical Command core system books by Medallion Simulations and a copy of the Core system rules clarifications. Plus. 100 ? Unpunched counter sheets ! Anyone need these ? |

Dobber: For WWII skirmish I second saltflats1939's recommendation for Battleground WWII. They are a great set of rules. Also Iron Ivan's Disposable Heroes is worth a look. For larger scale games, Too Fat Lardies' Chain of Command and I Ain't Been Shot Mum are worth a look. For more modern combat I would suggest you have a look at Nordic Weasel's No End In Sight or at the Force on Force and Ambush Alley rule systems. Cheers and good gaming. Rod Robertson |

Skirmish? I recommend Nuts! by Two Hour Wargames. |

I'm another fan of THW NUTS – and if you haven't looked at it for a while, there is a new streamlined version (NUTS:FV for Final Version) still featuring a reaction system, but now running quicker than previously. Insight is now taken at the "group" level rather than individual figures, so a squad leader rather than every grunt. And Chain Reaction FV, the free rules, have the same mechanism, so its great to "try before you buy"… |

Another vote for FUBAR. It is great for small actions where you have a few teams/squads on the board. The vehicle rules are okay. What about Bolt Action? |

Late to the game here, 'At Close Quarters' is a good skirmish set. I really like the pin (suppression) and morale rules. You have to use more tactics in order to be successful. Recently played a D-Day landing then 2nd scenario attacked a small village – solitaire. US versus Germans. Great set of rules. Really like them. |

Disposable Heroes Point Blank +1. Here's an AAR of me using the rules: link Very easy to learn and plays quickly. |
Triccor | 01 Jul 2015 8:25 a.m. PST |
I tried several WWII skirmish rules and I suggest "The Face of Battle" for 20mm scale (it very datailed, including specific rule for jam, mishap, stand/kneel/prone, wound…) and Operation Squad Evolution (by Torriani Games) for 28mm scale. Cheers, Emanuele |
