"Of all the awards Wendell Young earned in World War II, the one that means the most is the only one he can't read.

Young earned the Russian Medal for Courage while a sergeant in World War II.

The silver medal hangs from a blue and silver ribbon, stamped with Cyrillic letters. It was given to him by Soviet Lt. Gen. Mikhail Tikhonov in 1945.

Young, now 92 and living in Raeford, was a sergeant in the Army when his unit reached a prison camp in Czechoslovakia to liberate American and Allied soldiers. About half of the freed soldiers were Russian, Young said…"
