This could be a genre, a scale, or even a feature. Something you have an unreasoning hatred of painting.

Mine is horses. I hate painting horses for some reason. Almost all of my cavalry was painted for me by someone else. I don't even know why I hate painting them, but it's a nightmare. They don't come out badly when I paint them. They aren't difficult, technically. I. Just. Hate. It.

Tires.

Not hate so much as dislike: irregular troops. Continental Militia, Confederates, Vikings, basically any units that won't have a solid "uniform" choice. The main reason is that in order to get an "authentic" feel I tend to paint my units in multiple colors to represent the fact that many units didn't have standardized uniforms. So fro ACW Rebs I'll paint a few units in Confederate gray, some in Butternut, then I'll have some that have bits of their uniforms in gray or butternut, then some guys who will have black, red, blue, or geen bits of uniform or kit as well as the the stock gray and brown. Blankets will be all sorts of colors including a few homemade quilts. Even if I set up an assembly line or process for each color its a pain. I find the effect worth it.

Also tires. Especially the ones on tracked vehicles

Horses, who actually enjoys painting horses? Second to that are irregular barbarian types.

So you can imagine how much fun Gallic Cavalry are….

GurKhan27 Jan 2015 3:09 a.m. PST

Belts and straps and scabbards and horses' harnessing. And hooves: a while ago I did a batch of 44 15mm Tibetan cataphracts, so 176 small hooves. Pretty tedious.

KTravlos27 Jan 2015 3:28 a.m. PST

Horses for me as well. And shame on me, as after humans they have been among the next biggest victims of war.

MHoxie27 Jan 2015 3:36 a.m. PST

Mounted troops that can dismount: gotta paint the horse, the rider, and the dismounted rider. Three times the work of an infantryman.

I have figured out faces and eyes, but not horses

ZULUPAUL Supporting Member of TMP27 Jan 2015 4:35 a.m. PST

Horses for me also.. mine always look like crap

WarWizard27 Jan 2015 4:39 a.m. PST

Horse and drummers. Usually save the drummers for last.

TunnelRat27 Jan 2015 5:01 a.m. PST

Everything! I find painting a complete chore and the thought of having to pick up a brush has me thinking of any and every excuse not to.

Puttees
Drums
Bogie wheel rubber
Incised decor on clothing. Much prefer relief decor.
Coming up with my own paint schemes for game specific figures.

I'm struggling with this thread as I kind of enjoy it all. I find painting horses enjoyable … sort of all gain, no pain as it's easy to do and the results are satisfying (you don't have to work quite so hard for good results) ..

I guess my pet hate is *second rate figures* – I'm prepared to go the extra mile and put a lot of work in finishing the models. I do find it soul destroying to put that work in on something that will never look any good because it is basically rubbish.

Black powder artillery, or indeed anything with spoked wheels – I'm always going to miss a bit!

Tracks and running gear on tanks…little tyres
Horses
Limber teams…good lord how tedious straps and harnesses and stuff everywhere,!

If I'm having a bad day, faces can drive me up the wall.

I like painting horses. Checks on socks or hat bands, plaid or tartan on the other hand…

Old Contemptibles27 Jan 2015 8:25 a.m. PST

I have to go with checks on socks too.

Horses, because of the traces. I think I go in spurts, though. Everything takes it turn getting painted then becomes something I hate to paint for a while.

vehicles, all of them

British Napoleonic Infantry – too many straps – even more if you have to do backpacks where the white straps on black are very obvious

wehrmacht27 Jan 2015 1:58 p.m. PST

White!

Hate it!!

wrgmr127 Jan 2015 2:05 p.m. PST

The little pointy pyramid designs on the top and bottom of drums, similar to vandyke on horse blankets, Napoleonic especially. I always have to touch them up or redo.

Muskets and rifles … extra brush work required to get the metal and wood parts to stand out.

dayglowill29 Jan 2015 5:00 a.m. PST

Horses, in any scale, and 6mm infantry.

Artillery, limbers and caissons.

spilling paint and getting everything you didn't mean to…

snurl106 Feb 2015 3:39 a.m. PST

Bogey wheel tires on tanks. There are 36 on a Mk.IV if you count the spares.

J Womack 9406 Feb 2015 7:06 a.m. PST

The tack is the least bothersome part of painting a horse to me, personally.

As far as something I find frustrating… plaids, checks, and pinstripes are tough.

And as for eyes – I usually just don't paint them. Somehow, whenever you look at most of my figures, they seem to be blinking. Odd, that.

Looks like our options so far are:

Horses
Faces
Plaids and checks
Tires
Artillery limbers
Spoked wheels
Eyes
Straps and belts
Camouflage
Irregular troops

snurl106 Feb 2015 10:17 p.m. PST

Flags?

Dasher10 Feb 2015 11:48 p.m. PST

World War II. I love the genre but for some reason the thought of sitting down to paint 100+ figures in virtually the same color scheme sends me right to the liquour.
Every WWII army I own, I purchased painted. Can't even stand the thought of painting them myself.
