One of the appealing thing about doing WotR is all the liveries on display. I'm wondering how many of the figs in the Perry wotr archers box should be painted with liveries. Do the figures with padded jackets display livery colors at all? What about the guys with brigandines?

All of them, if you are depicting retinue archers.

The padded jacket or brigandine would be generally worn over the livery coat, so where sleeves or the lower part of the livery coat is visible then it should be painted in livery colours.

Alternatively, some of the padded jackets could be made so as to incorporate the livery colours.

6 of the 12 poses are clearly wearing livery jackets over their other kit, so are an automatic yes for me. For the others, you could paint the edges of livery coats sticking out as an under-layer, or simply skip it, mixing them in with liveried troops, or using them for militia units who'd often not be liveried.

(I'm planning on using mine for Peter Pig's Bloody Barons rules, so it's an easy way of telling troop quality – household units get everyone in livery, regular are mainly liveried with a smattering of padded jackets etc, and militia have nobody in livery.)

I do the same as Dom Skelton.

Would a single unit have a mix of liveries ?

Thanks

I'm painting mine assuming the livery is a form of tabard/surcoat, so the long sleeve is the tunic's, so they are a mixture of colours, though some of the arms have a short sleeve on top, which is part of the surcoat.

JWebster, do you mean 12 men, or do you mean per side. Each group of 12 men I am doing are from one lord (I am starting with Lovell, as that is my wife's maiden name), but my friend said it is probably best that each unit is a different faction – that makes them a bit more flexible for providing both sides, as some lords swapped sides at the drop of a face-plate- I am going to paint a unit of billmen from Stanley, partly because of this, but mostly I was at Uni 27 years ago with Rob Stanley, who said he was a direct decendent (he was my Star Trek RPG engineering officer!)
