Hi, everybody! After completing a regiment of 18mm AB Hussars, I decided I needed a change of pace. So I dug a box of the Perry plastic French Heavy Cavalry. Sometime ago I had painted some of Perry's French infantry for a client, but this is the first at the cav. Hope you enjoy and many thanks for looking. Best Regards, John
Here is the Officer
And the Eagle Bearer (flag is on order).

Beautifully done. Did you use oil paints? |
stoneman1810 | 25 Jan 2015 6:39 p.m. PST |
The horses are all in oils as well as the trumpeters green jacket. All else are acrylics. The blues, as usual, come out a little more vibrant in the photos than in the actual work. I used the Blue Paint Set by Andrea Miniatures – an excellent product imho. |

they look great. How did you find painting 28 mm versus 18 mm? I am doing the same, one unit in 18 mm then some few 28 mm. I found 28 mm far more challenging |

What about that dappled grey then, as wrgmr1 said? I am saving that image! Then the red edge to the officer's shabraque, or the aurore rank stripes on the eagle bearer. Inspiring work. PS, good luck with flag. If it is from you know who, it will be magnificent quality, but you'll curse as it will not fit between the hand and the eagle (it should but………) |

Every time I see that Perry officer, whoever paints him….. I think of Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead…..could just be me. |

I'm about to paint some Perry plastic horses and am looking forward to it. I've oil rubbed horses for years. These look like you just straight painted them with oil and did some blending. Is that right? It's very well executed. What kind of primer did you use for the oils? Well, for everything I guess actually? |

Guys – thanks for your kind comments! Von Winterfeldt: actually I find the 28mm easier. I paint all sizes of figures the same way. On the 18mm horses, the blending from darkest hue to lightest highlight has to be done in a very small area and the blending is tedious to say the least. On the 28mm, the working area is larger and much easier to blend. The 28mm horses take about the same time to do as the 18mm. idontbeleveit: I prime with Tamiya Fine Surface Primer (white). The horse is then "under painted" with acrylics – Vallejo Light Gray for the gray horse, Orange Brown for the bay/chestnut, and Black Gray for the Black horse. The the tube oil paints (Winsor & Newton) come into play. I work from the darkest shadow gradually uo to the lightest hifglights. On the Black horse, I mix a trace of Prussian Blue into the gray highlights – has to be done with restraint. Done right it looks really good. |

I am painting almost the same topic, horses are finished, riders are next, it will be interesting to compare. I painted the horses completly with acrylics and mainly artist acrylics, the effect, when you will see it – is very similiar to your technique with oils. I found 28 mm much more difficult than 18 mm, a lot more complicated shading has to be done. |
