I can quit any time I want to. But I'm going through my rules collection and cataloging it, sorting it, and writing new entries for my rules directory project. Turns out I now have 723 rule sets in the collection. But they keep making new ones….. |
Xintao | 25 Jan 2015 12:05 p.m. PST |
Uhm you own 723 rule sets? Or you have cataloged 723 sets? Xin |

What kind of problem could you possibly have? |

He isn't just cataloguing his collection, he is updating his existing catalog! |

How many of them have you played? Even once? |
cavcrazy | 25 Jan 2015 1:32 p.m. PST |
That might be a problem……. |
Cold Steel | 25 Jan 2015 1:42 p.m. PST |
So is your problem the number of rules you have or that you are cataloging them? |
Extra Crispy | 25 Jan 2015 1:52 p.m. PST |
Okay, let me say it one more time. I do NOT have a problem. The 723 is how many I own. I like to print my PDFs so yes, it includes them but I have hard copy of them all (well, except for a small handful I haven't gotten around to printing yet). How many have I played? No idea. For one, I don't have any mini for periods pre 1700 (yet – Vikings are on the way). And I am happy to play whatever game/rules the club is putting on. So I've played a bunch. But then playing them is not why I collect them. Asking how many I've played is like asking how big is your unpainted lead pile (mine, by the way, fits in two showboxes)? |

Anyone that has 723 of anything has a problem. This is definitely a problem. |

If some has 723 dollars, that's not a problem, nor would 7,230,000.00. |
snodipous | 25 Jan 2015 2:46 p.m. PST |
Add a morale system and a command phase to your cataloguing process, and you'll have 724. |
Legbiter | 25 Jan 2015 4:22 p.m. PST |
This isn't a problem, all of them gave you ideas, whether you ever played them, or not. At least that's what I tell my wife :-) |

How will you handle imaginary rules, like Flames of Liberty, in which I will charge $100 USD and send you a few scribbled notes on a legal pad paper? |
Extra Crispy | 25 Jan 2015 6:08 p.m. PST |
They go in my imaginary catalog. |

I could but I ran out of Bitcoins |

If I had only $723 USD wrgmr1 I might feel that my financial situation was less than ideal. |

Just remember it is important to always know someone who has more of what you collect.. that way you can rationalize your not as bad as that guy. Always have a that guy just in case :) |

What is your rules per year index though? If you've been gaming for 20 years, you're at approximately 35 rules / year or 3 rules per month. A wee-bit on the high side, but certainly not in "PROBLEM" territory. I agree, you don't have a problem. Also – does you total include supplements or just rule sets? (unless of course I was incorrect in my assumptions and your RpY index is much higher!) |

@B6GOBOS: Happy to help. @VonTed: Started in the hobby 10 or 11 years ago…but I have bought an awful lot at flea markets/Ebay for a song. But okay I'm guessing my final RpY will be more on the order of 75 / year. And NO, it is NOT a problem. 3 games per month is about a week to read each, plus a bit of time to actually play a game here and there. If one reads rules for recreation (and I do on occasion) that doesn't seem bad at all. |
Extra Crispy | 26 Jan 2015 1:08 p.m. PST |
On the matter of supplements/variants. If it expands the game then I count it as rules – so the Vietnam and WW1 versions of Flames of War are separate rules. The army lists/scenario books for Flames of War do not. But I admit it is a slightly hazy area in some cases. I also have a lot of "army lists" for games that don't change the rules, just provide stats and maye a special rule or two (example: SCW stats for the WW2 game Nuts!) |
