Wizbangs question,
Taken originally from the FoW Verison1.0 MRB back in 2004, the basing used is slightly different due to the larger figure scale, model size and model fine detail. Each base can have soft rounded corners while retaining the general overall dimensions.
The basing guidelines:
Infantry teams Small base for 1-3 figure models [1 3/4" wide by 1 1/2" deep]. These are typically command teams, Independent teams, HMG teams, small to medium mortars (up to 90mm) teams with 2-3 figure crews.
Infantry teams Medium base for 4-5 figure models [2 1/2" wide by 1 3/4" deep]. Your basic infantry team, large 100mm+ mortars teams with 4+ figure crew. Note, I base HMG on the smaller Infantry team basing even if they had 4 crew members (in platoon organization) since I started the game under Ver1.0 rules. Under Ver1.0, all HMG had 3 crew figures, only recently have some of the HMG teams been shown with 4 crew figures. A player can base his HMG either way.
Man-Packed Gun teams with 2-3 crew figures use small Infantry team base.
Man-Packed Gun teams with 4+ crew figures use Medium Infantry team base.
Cavalry Cmd teams: 1-2 figure models [1 1/4" wide by 2" deep].
Cavalry teams: 3-4 figure models [2" wide by 2 1/2" deep]
Dismounted cavalry use the infantry small and medium sized basing above.
All Vehicles are based with a 1/8 to 1/4" edging around the vehicle model hull/ body dimensions. Basing is optional but I have found the fine model boogie/ track assemblies or wheels require basing to protect.
Gun Teams are based with up to 1/8" to 1/4" edging to model (gun tube length exempted) dimensions. Sufficient room to mount the crew on the base provided. Extra gun crews bases can be separately based on basing to match width of gun team and 1" deep or use the small infantry base above.
Mortars Gun teams are based upon the infantry basing above. Number of crew determines the base size but typically 82mm or smaller (2-3 crew figures) mortars are on the small infantry base and 90mm+ (4+ crew figures) mortars are on the medium infantry base.
Objectives are modeled on the Larger cavalry base of 2" wide by 2 1/2" deep.
Note: Warriors, special teams and like typically have 2 figure models on small infantry base.
I use the common vinyl composition floor tile material sold in Home Depot or Lowes. Buy a box and lasts forever it seems. Used to base the vehicles, guns and all team bases. cut to size then pliers to clip the corners. Clipped corners are then filed with hand file to smooth the corner rounded. Gives weight to the basing for the miniatures especially.
Bases are painted green then flocked with texture material of choice. Add in bushes and rocks to desire. Labelled underneath.
