During intense fighting in the Colmar Pocket along the French-Swiss border, the 19-year-old 2nd Lieutenant manned a machine gun on a burning tank destroyer and made a desperate solo attack against German forces. Murphy won the Medal of Honor for his actions, and later parlayed his military celebrity into a successful post-war film career…"

One of my childhood heroes, as I have got older and understand his struggles post war I find myself admiring him even more.

There's a scene in The Red Badge of Courage when Audie runs away from a Confederate infantry charge. I suspect in real life the regiment would take to its heels and Audie would have repulsed the charge single-handed.

If you haven't seen the movie, do. It isn't perfect but damn good.
