The U.S. has moved two amphibious warships close to Yemen as a precaution against an ongoing militia uprising in the region, Pentagon officials said on Wednesday.

Amphibious warships USS Iwo Jima (LHD-7) and USS Fort McHenry (LSD-43) with embarked elements of the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit (24 MEU) are on station in the southern part of the Red Sea near the tip of the Arabian Peninsula, a defense official told USNI News on Tuesday.

"We are continuing to closely monitor the situation in Yemen," Pentagon spokesman Col. Steve Warren said on Wednesday. "The [USS] Iwo Jima and [USS] Fort McHenry are on station, and between those two warships, there's enough combat power to respond to whatever contingency may come up."…

What could go wrong?

Typical gunboat diplomacy that's been going on since, like, forever. If Iran is supporting the Houthi rebels, it's another example of the muddled picture in the ME as we are 'with them' against IS/Daesh in Iraq and Syria but 'against' them in Yemen.

That isn't an intervention force, but an evacuation contingency.

It almost sounds like a challenge……….

Nothing, Cyrus.

Yemen is one of our "successes".

Yea, no gunboat diplomacy. As mentioned, the ships are to evacuate US personnel.

Rather surprised that hasn't already been done, but it appears we don't learn from history very well.

Also, not a muddled "picture".

Really more of a muddled policy against Iran.

They don't want a repeat of the Libya fiasco. No more "salmon fishing in the Yemen," then.

It's not like Yemen was ever a functioning country in the first place. Those with an interest in history of that part of the world will remember it was two countries up to 1990.

Dictatorship is the only thing that's kept this fuedal, fundamentalist, durg addicted place together.

Well, they're starting to evacuate the U.S. Embassy.

Guess Washington finally figured-out that more dead Ambassadors won't look good in the polls.

Bread, circuses, and a woman in a tub, drinking milk and eating cereal, for the masses…..

Very true … we should never forget Benghazi … but in time most will …
