Hi,

I need to (probably convert) six wargames figures into mounted versions of Kings Royal Rifle Corp. It is not so much the uniform I am looking for but rather pictures of then Corp mounted.

I was hoping that someone with more knowledge than I could point me in the right direction as regards images of the above said Corp being mounted?

Cheers,
Darrell.

On the Perry's website, Michael Perry has written (including illustrations) a "Brief History and Uniform Guide" for the Sudan 1883-85.You can go online and read it. Regarding the Mounted KRRC it says:

"Mounted Infantry were raised from various regiments and mounted on local ponies. Frocks were the same as their parent unit but all wore Bedford cords, blue puttees, 50 round bandolier and carried a Martini Henry and sword bayonet. The pouch and belt on this figure are Rifles issue."

The Wargammes Foundry Mounted Infantry from the Boer War sets might be a good starting palce for your conversions. This is a picture of a unit I call the "10th Hussars" that include those figures.

Thanks. I've got the uniform guide you speak of.

That's a very good suggestion- I wonder what I could use as a basis for the actual troopers? Will the Foundry mini's do at a pinch or are they too far out there for the beginning parts of the previous decade?

Don't have any of them myself but maybe the Imperial Mounted Infantry from Empress Miniatures Zulu War would be a better fit.Not really sure though.

Maybe paint them similar to this:

I was thinking the same thing re: Empress Mounted Infantry, Rhingyl, as I'm a big fan of the Paul Hicks sculpts for that range -- only problem is their Anglo-Zulu War Mtd. Infantry have on boots instead of puttees.

On the other hand, Atheling, if you only need 6 of them… it wouldn't be that difficult to carve 6 pairs of boots into 6 pairs of puttees.

Yeah, it would be a simple enough job to carve away some of the boot and add puttees.

Are the Empress mini's one piece castings?

I was thinking of mounting them on Perry horses just to keep them in line with the cavalry (?).

Thanks again Mad Guru, you're a star :>)

I have bought the Empress Lancers for the Zulu war. They have separate riders with heads that need to be attached. Don't know if the MI are the same way. Below is what the lancers look like:

I think the Empress MI would look good on the Perry horses (example below)if they are not one piece castings of course.

Very nice looking stuff.

Thanks guys, I'll e-mail Empress and ask them about it.

Hi Guys,

The Empress Mounted Rifles are in 3 parts, horse, rider, head.

I think if you added puttees over the boots they'd be a good match for Perry Mi dismounted. The heads I got in my packs have some bearded men, you might want a pack of extra heads if you need more shaven and mustached faces to match Perry.

I've decided to go purely with the Perry Miniatures stuff as I can re-use the camels, with the addition of a Screw Gun from North Star, to make a camel train for the Artillery too.

I'm going to start work on them tonight so watch this space!

And watch this one too (My Shooting Leave Blog):

That's a good idea, it'll save a lot of time over scuplting puttees and such.

Well, there will still be a little work on the backs of the Camel Corp legs but it's not too much at all. Saves me a hell of a lot of time too! :>)

Yeah, I bought some Perry Dismounted which I will use as they were wearing the usual Camel Corp type uniform at Abu Krea.

Can't wait to get painting them! I have started but have other stuff to clear first :>(

Just to add that the pics of the conversions will follow very shortly.

I've just got to contend with a coat of gloss varnish, matting down and basing then they're complete.

Darrell.
