Elisabeth Bathory, was a Hungarian Countess from the Báthory family, born on August 7, 1560 and died August 21, 1614. The legend has made her one of the most famous murderers of Hungarian and Slovak history

Alert! This is a bloody issue.

But the painting is superb!

I'm beginning to think European model figure shows are this hobby's equivalent to slasher and porn movies…

Zardoz22 Jan 2015 4:16 a.m. PST

that's pretty grotesque. Excellent painting, but the subject matter is extremely nasty.

She gets a sidebar in a Vlad the Impaler book I just read; why anyone would make a model of this is beyond me.

tigrifsgt22 Jan 2015 6:14 a.m. PST

That's disgusting.

Mark RedLinePS22 Jan 2015 11:29 a.m. PST

Horrid, nothing at all to do with why I enjoy this hobby.

Larry R22 Jan 2015 2:06 p.m. PST

Why?

Besides the disturbing subject, I do not like the painting job either. The skins are well done, not brilliant but passable. However the hair looks sloppy, and the blood is simply wrong; it doesn't look natural at all. I've seen much better works on the same topic… and more tasteful too.

Great paintjob and well done miniature. Gives a nice depiction of the "legend" of Elisabeth Báthory. "Legend" because, well the witnesses and prosecutors all gained from Elisabeth her wealth after her conviction. So they sure were not unprejudiced and had to make her look as evil as possible.

Agreed, it is a gruesome scene, but for instance the effect that a Tiger tank (or any other weapon of war) can inflict on humans is also very gruesome…, so why is this any different?

And quite a lot of (European) legends and fairytales tend to be gruesome. Until they are ruined by Disney of course.

I'm usually very tolerant of these things with regard to the mixing of gore and pulchritude but somehow for me this crosses the line. I don't say don't do it, or don't show it but the excellence of technique does not cover it-- for me.

I also agree with Monash 1916. The model of the Tiger Tank is fine, but we don't model what it does to human beings.

I'm sorry if this offends anyone, but I find the obscenity of gore more disturbing than the obscenity of sex and the body. It's my philosophy which defines "evil" as "pain and suffering."

Still, the artist has expressed himself, and that must be allowed. The choice of liking the art is individual. Let me put it this way. In many of the sculpts and figures exhibited here, there is an element in us that "I really would like to be there, or with her in some physical way." I don't think anyone can say that about this particular item.

monash191623 Jan 2015 10:29 a.m. PST

I really like this kit as it as, as a depiction of the legend of Elisabeth Báthory. Elisabeth has really this kind of insane and evil look in her eyes.
As said, I like it as a depiction of a legend or as something that really happened in history, as in a long long time ago…and far away.

Like Otto, I also would not like to be there in some physical way. Nor would I like to hear about such an event as this really happened in the present day on the 9'o clock news. But as a representation of the legend it is a great set of miniatures and well executed by both the sculptor and the painter.
(By the way, I do not like slasher horror movies at all.)

chironex23 Jan 2015 8:13 p.m. PST

I think it's inaccurate. The legend I heard had a much more elaborate setup for causing the "villainess" to be showered in young blood. I also don't think the gore has been blended into the scene properly.

"The model of the Tiger Tank is fine, but we don't model what it does to human beings."

We being who? Did you think a couple of disembodied skulls on the spikes of a Chaos Marine land raider that weren't originally carved on were as far as it went?

Still, the artist has expressed himself, and that must be allowed.

Why?
All kinds of garbage gets by by calling it "art" and " the artist is expressing himself ".
Nonsense. Garbage is garbage. Don't tell me I have to respect it.

chironex29 Jan 2015 10:36 p.m. PST

I recently saw a work on Deviantart on that very subject. Of course, it wasn't about a certain original being garbage, which most people would think it was, out of context – it was the fact that there were so many people copying the idea of a blank canvas painted completely black that the purpose may well have been defeated…

abdul666lw30 Jan 2015 6:39 a.m. PST

So you prefer a vignette of a fighter despatching an imploring, helpless wounded opponent?

Winston Smith30 Jan 2015 11:33 a.m. PST

That's a strange logical leap you make there. What makes you think that I would prefer such a vignette?
That's like assuming that if I do not like the New York Yankees, I have to like broccoli or belong to AARP. Does not compute.
