… New Mk47 'Mutant'.

"An American gun-maker has blended features of the U.S. AR-15-style rifle and the Russian AK-47-style rifle in a new product called the Mk-47 "Mutant."

CMMG Inc., the Fayette, Missouri-based arms maker, unveiled the hybrid weapon this week at SHOT Show, the nation's largest small arms exposition, which is expected to draw some 60,000 attendees at a sprawling conference center here in the city.

It's the latest example of how American manufacturers are working to convert the AR-15, similar in design to the M-4 carried by U.S. troops, to shoot magazines and 7.62mm x 39mm ammunition for the AK-47. Known as the Kalashnikov after its Soviet designer, the AK-47 is one of the most prolific firearms in the world and increasingly popular with stateside shooters…"

So people want to shoot dirty Commie ammo through a direct impingement rifle? Have fun cleaning!

There have been a lot of bad variations on the AK, and this sounds like the worst of them. There is no way you can claim "AK reliability" when giving up the piston and loose tolerances of the AK.

SgtPain21 Jan 2015 8:17 p.m. PST

OMG they took the worst parts from the AK-47 and M-16 and combine them into one rifle? No wonder they call the "Mutant", not only is it ugly I doubt it works worth s**#%.

I have both the civilian version of the AK-47 and the M-16 in my collection, and both guns have their good and bad points, However I can't think of anything worse than combining the Russian 7.62x39 round with its dirty propellant and lacquered coated steel cases, with the M-16 / M-4 direct gas operation, the tight tolerances of the rotating bolt assembly and burial chamber.

I doubt you'll get 10 rounds through the gun, without having to clean it.

Well, Winchester, Fiochi, and several others do make brass cased, boxer primed 7.62x39. Not as cheap as Russian or surplus, but quite a bit cleaner.

Still not a fan of the concept.

Best AK is a AK can't beat the perfection of simple.

Very true!

One of these would be nice if looking for a little more power and accuracy -

Available in the US as -

And currently available (while supplies last) for a little more than a third of what they want for that 'Mutant.'

An AR-10 will be a lot better.

7.62 x 54 as well, so a far superior cartridge for about the same price as that commie one.

goragrad22 Jan 2015 8:31 p.m. PST

Actually those Zastava M-77s are going for 500 and change right now. And I like the rod rather than the AR gas driven piston.

Another alternative would be a PTR-91 – the GI goes for around 900.

Or A DSA FN FAL clone for just at 1000.

AR-10s I am seeing start at 1200 or so.

??

7.62x54R is the "commie" (more like, Imperial Russian, it dates to 1881) cartridge. It sits between 7.62NATO and .30-06 in horsepower, with NATO length. Problem is, it's rimmed, so it's finnicky in box magazines and ammo belts. I still like my PSL and SVT-40, though.

But direct impingement and dirty combloc steel-cased ammo is a malfunction waiting to happen.

cwlinsj22 Jan 2015 9:11 p.m. PST

Yawn. I think the Galil and Daewoo K2 are better examples of combining the best of AK and M16 designs.

goragrad22 Jan 2015 11:57 p.m. PST

I assumed a typo Lion and that he meant 7.62x51 or .308.

As to the dirty ammo, if someone can spend 1500 for something that shoots 7.62x39, I would expect they can afford western ammo.

I occasionally run some through the MAK-90. Generates brass to reload for hunting with the SKS.

As to ammo price I have been getting better deals on 54 than 39. One reason I shoot the PSL more than the MAK-90. M-77 being .308 would be more expensive, but if things fell apart would probably be easier to find ammo for. My brother is thinking of one and if I pick up some work I may as well.

At least until they start importing the M-91s…

cwlinsj23 Jan 2015 12:22 a.m. PST

If "things fell apart" that SKS of yours would make a fine weapon.

Mako1123 Jan 2015 12:29 a.m. PST

Yea, I meant .308.

And, for the pricing, I meant the price per round of ammo, not the guns (sorry for not being clear on that).

I'd much rather have an AR-10, at any price, than the alternatives in 7.62 x 39.

I imagine with a decent scope, you could really reach out with that one, quite a bit further than with an AK, or bastardized version of one.
